US weighing more sanctions against Syria over support for Iraqi insurgents
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/usiraqsyriasanctions

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States is considering imposing new sanctions on Syria to force it to crack down on Iraqis in Syria who are providing support to the Iraqi insurgents, The New York Times said, quoting top US counterterrorism officials.

The officials, who asked not to be identified, said Syria had not taken action against the network of Iraqis, despite months of quiet protests from the United States, including a weekend visit to the Syrian capital Damascus by US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.

The officials said that under consideration was a ban on US dealings with the Commercial Bank of Syria, the country's single government-owned financial institution specializing in foreign exchange.

In May the US Treasury Department (news - web sites) accused the bank of laundering money that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) diverted from the UN-run oil-for-food program while he was in power.

2. The suicide bomber that killed/injured US soldiers was a Saudi student.
Not that that fact matters to the neoCONimperialist PNACers since Syria and Iran are next on their hit-list.

...insurgents"

But I thought Iraqis weren't the ones fighting american troops? I thought Bin Laden was importing foreign suicide bombers by the boat loads?

4. Ahhh yes...now we know what's going on.
It is up to IRAQ'S OCCUPIERS to secure Iraq's borders. It is NOT up to Syria to decide who can and who can't cross over into Iraq.

Imagine the outrage in the USA if CANADA started deciding who can & who can't cross into the USA!

Out of 10,000 detainees, there are only 353 "foreign" rebels, and for all anyone knows, they've been living in Iraq for years. Out of those 353, 61 are Egyptians, 59 are Saudis...any sanctions against EGYPT and Saudi??? Of course not! And 56 Syrians.

And SYRIA is going to get MORE US sanctions.

Not Egypt.

Not Saudi (the ones who financed the 911 attacks; the ones who made up the majority of hijackers).

Nope. SYRIA is to be sanctioned.

Just any bullshit excuse to sanction Syria, to bring them to their knees in poverty, to weaken them...just like they did to Iraq.

And history just keeps on repeating.

7. bush is softening up Syria. Just like we did to Iraq.
Starve them to weakness with sanctions for awhile. Then invade them.

More Egyptians detained in Iraq than Syrians; more Saudis detained in Iraq than Syrians...yet only Syria is to be sanctioned for not doing the US occupiers' job of securing Iraq's border.

9. The US has very little real leverage on Syria.
The constant propaganda campaign is a hopeful attempt to get
something for nothing.
