Shock jock: I was pulled from the air over satellite dispute (Stern)
NEW YORK -- Shock jock Howard Stern says he was pulled off four radio stations this week for using a pair of newly forbidden words: Satellite radio.

Citadel Broadcasting Corp., which aired Stern's envelope-pushing syndicated show, opted to yank the program on Monday because the host was devoting too much time to his impending switch to Sirius Satellite Radio, Stern told his listeners.

Stern's decision to abandon terrestrial radio is often a topic of conversation on his show. Citadel felt the program had become "an infomercial" for Stern's next employer and pulled the plug, the shock jock said.

Stern's show had aired on Citadel stations in Syracuse, N.Y.; Providence, R.I.; Harrisburg, Pa., and Grand Rapids, Mich. Alex Eule, a spokesman for Citadel, said Wednesday the company would have no comment on the dispute.

why Stern is making the move to satellite radio, and his wisdom in doing so! I'd do the same thing to get both the FCC fucks and the program director fucks, who make life a constant hell for him, off my back. Well, they're shooting themselves in the foot, since they're going to lose millions once he makes the move.

3. What great business sense. Go from #1 to #22 in 4 markets in 1 day!
Don't you hate it when your manager outmanages common sense?

5. When he was on TV recently, he could only talk about Sirius
Even when David Letterman asked him a question about * being re-Selected, Stern turned it into a Satellite radio commercial.

I was very disappointed in him.

7. I know what you are saying. And I can see different viewpoints.
I, for one, am thrilled when he discusses it (but then I'm a Sirius subscriber). It is like 'getting religion.' You just hope and pray that everyone signs up. It is so neat!!! And the sound today as I was listening was just simply of incredible quality.

Sounds to me like Howard is just itching to get over there soon. I hope that he does! I think that he is going to help Sirius' effort to have two fulltime progressive channels on the air. I also think that he is going to be a powerful advocate for free speech.

He takes care of himself - but I don't have a problem with that. And I probably sound like a Sirius commercial myself - because I'm so satisfied, having had the service for a year, that I want to sing its praises to my friends too!

8. I've been drooling over getting Sirius myself, but can't afford it
My FM radio reception is full of static and I cannot get AAR on AM at all.

I actually have an www.eCost.com page bookmarked right now with a Sirus setup on it . . . but . . . must . . . not . . . spend . . . money . . .

9. Yep, I know what you mean.
But I justified based upon the use I get out of it. I certainly use it more than a magazine subscription, which would cost the equivalent every year.

It did cost me somewhere between $150 - $200 to set up, though. I have the receiver, the home docking unit, and the car docking unit (and the FM modulator - helps the sound, makes it so it doesn't go through your tape deck). There is an installation charge also.

Just was worth it to me. I asked for a year ago November for a birthday present. Hope you found/find a deal.

11. I can understand why they did it.. Usually when employees signal their
desire to leave or "give notice", they are terminated immediately. Stern should not use his NOW show to advertise his FUTURE show..

He should not be surprised at the yanking of his show. Why would they want to advertise for him for free, when it will be direct competition to their own programming?

10. Nooooo!
I was wondering why he wasn't on 105.7 the X (Harrisburg, PA) this week! What will I do without my daily dose of Stern? That was the only station in my area to play him :( Citadel likes to suck the fun out of everything :(

21. Terrestrial radio is scared sh*tless of Satellite radio,
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 10:56 AM by dbt
and iPod and Internet radio, among other things. That would be Thing One about the situation referenced in the Newsday article. T-Radio is in a huge pile of feces, which is largely of its own making: declining listenership owing to its own bland programming and ever-increasing commercial loads--up to and including spots for satellite radio! T-radio does not know how to program against Satellite; there's no model yet, nothing that can be stolen from someone else.

Thing Two is that Stern is about a smart bastard when it comes to promoting himself. He will take every opportunity that T-Radio gives him to hawk his new wares, and as long as T-stations continue to carry his show they are giving him a daily soapbox to promote their comepetition.

The mega-corporations that own way too many T-stations are literally being hoist on their own petard of Greed. Long-term, they are cutting their own throats. Short-term, there's big money to be made off the Stern show. It will be interesting to see which way T-radio is forced to jump.

Welcome to the jungle, boys!
