Pataki wants tax checkoff to help pay for 9-11 memorial
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Gov. George Pataki called Wednesday for the state to implement an income-tax checkoff system that will allow New York taxpayers to donate to the World Trade Center memorial being built at ground zero.

The governor, in his 11th annual State of the State message, said Rep. Vito Fossella, a Staten Island Republican, would try to move legislation through Congress to provide for a similar checkoff box on federal tax forms. The state program is subject to approval by the state Legislature.

Pataki also announced the memorial will be illuminated at night "so that visitors will be greeted by a welcoming glow throughout the Memorial Plaza."

The tax checkoff plans are designed to support the work of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation. All four former living presidents have agreed to serve as honorary members of the foundation's board.

2. Fuck pataki..if it weren't for bush and his
ilk..they may not have had to have been a 9/11..and surely many lives would have been saved if bush would have been a leader instead of a scared goat..and a photo opportunist.

3. I don't understand exactly what he's trying to do.
I'm sure everybody is already allowed to donate to the 911 memorial. Is he trying for something similar to the check-off box on your 1040 that designates a certain amount of $$ to that purpose but doesn't come out of your tax refund? Is he trying to set up a tax deductible fund for the memorial? It seems like an odd way of doing this, don't ya think?

6. its just a way to raise money for a specific cause
THe amount given as a check-off adds to the total tax due (or reduces the refund). Its just a "gift" to the particular cause listed. In 2004, the NY State tax return had itemized gift check-offs for a missing and exploited children fund, an olympics fund, a wildlife fund, breast cancer research, prostate cancer research, and alzheimer's research.

7. How about "Bush Bucks"?
Once again they could forego a party or two and hand over a few bucks for this. It's time they start making the sacrifice that normal people have to do everyday.
