U.S. military to investigate abuse allegations at Guantanamo
By FRANK GRIFFITHS
Associated Press Writer
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

The U.S. military command that oversees the detention mission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has opened an internal investigation into allegations of prisoner abuse, stemming from recently released FBI documents, officials said Wednesday.

The U.S. Southern Command in Miami will begin the investigation this week and has assigned Army Brig. Gen. John T. Furlow to lead it, said Raul Duany, a SouthCom spokesman.

A military lawyer will work with Furlow, Duany said. A report on Furlow's findings and recommendations is expected to be submitted the first week of February to SouthCom commander Army Gen. Bantz J. Craddock.

But Furlow has the option of requesting an extension for the investigation, Duany said. Once Craddock reviews the report, he will decide on the next steps to be taken, he said.

3. Who's watching the watchers?
The L.A.P.D. dos this from time to time - they investigate themselves, and once in a while they find a dirty cop or two and hang him out to dry.
The ship I was on in the Navy had ONE "Legal Officer".

Get it? If you were accused of something, and needed counsel, you got the one guy who was both Defense and Prosecution.

4. The investigation?
"Do you see any abuse?"
"Nah, I don't see any abuse. Do you see any abuse?"
"Me neither."
"I guess our work here is done."

5. Whoa, now there's a real nail-biter!
I'll bet anyone who might have done anything resembling torture is just shaking in their khakis at this news! Look out, you bad actors -- the military is on the case.

10. Senator Kennedy said TORTURE still goes on TODAY
when the man who made TORTURE LEGAL becomes head of 'JUSTICE', on the heels of Ashcroft, there can be no more doubt in most fair observers minds that we certainly are EMBRACING FASCISM.
