WP: Army Doctors Accused of Violating Geneva Convention
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A51032-2005Jan5.html

Medical Staff May Have Assisted Torture at Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, Medical Journal Reports

By Joe Stephens
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 5, 2005; 6:37 PM

U.S. Army doctors violated the Geneva Conventions by helping intelligence officers carry out abusive interrogations at military detention centers, perhaps participating in torture, according to a report in tomorrow's edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Medical personnel helped tailor interrogations to the physical and mental conditions of individual detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the report claims. It says medical workers gave interrogators access to patient medical files and that psychiatrists and other physicians collaborated with interrogators and guards who deprived detainees of sleep, restricted them to diets of bread and water and exposed them to extremes of heat and cold.

"Clearly, the medical personnel who helped to develop and execute aggressive counter-resistance plans thereby breached the laws of war," says the four-page article, which is labeled, "Perspective."

"The conclusion that doctors participated in torture is premature, but there is probable cause for suspecting it," the article says.

5. Prison time would be appropriate, too
I believe that is how Nazi doctors were punished for enabling abuse and torture at concentration camps.

15. Without a doubt.
Just how do their actions relate to the healing arts? I can't imagine how these people could have justified their actions to themselves. My god.

They have no place in our best imitation of "civilized society."

8. When Iraqi doctors were found to be helping Saddam torture Iraqis
the bushbots were all over it condemning the doctors as animals. Iraqi doctors and their families were under threat of torture themselves if they did not comply, but the bushbots still condemned them. I wonder if the bushbots are still in a condemning mood now.

13. Doctors have ALWAYS been required to assist torturers
Ut us a concept as old as time.

Even in the Middle Ages, when BushPutinism was simple brutal theocratic monarchy (because that is all it had to be back then when elaborate BushPutinist frauds and Orwellian BushPutinist Rationales), crude physicians were advising the tortureres (quite a bit more imeprfectly, as you might imagine).

This is nothing new, but it speaks to the deliberate and unabated policy of turture Amerika continues to use as a matter of policy.

Though hidden, and hidden not very well, behind a mixture of Orwellian Lies when Theocracy meets Totalitarianism.

Like the old Commies used to do: "The peace and freedom-loving peoples would NEVER tolerate gulags in the Siberia. Never."

And then just keep on running the things.

17. American Public Health Association Condemns Participation of Medical ...
... Personnel in Physical and Emotional Abuse of Military Prisoners

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The American Public Health Association (APHA) today expressed its outrage about reports of health practitioner participation in the abuse of military detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"These practices are unacceptable and, if true, violate the Geneva Conventions," said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP, APHA executive director.

The Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, U.S. Army regulations and the War Crimes Act require military personnel not to engage in and to report acts of abuse and torture. This is of particular concern for those who have pledged to heal. APHA adds its voice to the call for a full and thorough investigation of the role of medical personnel in the treatment of military prisoners and detainees. <snip>
