GQ names Bush most powerful man in Britain
http://www.salon.com/ent/wire/2005/01/05/gq/index.html

Jan. 5, 2005 | London -- The most powerful man in Britain is American President Bush, while soccer star David Beckham's sway over British society is in free fall, a men's magazine said Wednesday.

Bush tied with Prime Minister Tony Blair for first place in the list drawn up by the British edition of GQ magazine.

Blair has long faced criticism that he simply follows Bush's orders as his "poodle," but GQ claimed that re-election has given Bush an even bigger say in British life. Last year, the U.S. president didn't make the top 100.

Beckham plummeted from eighth to 23rd place, reflecting a turbulent year for the England soccer captain in which "the wheels seem to have come off Brand Beckham," GQ said.

7. From what I have seen, the average Brit HATES the Emperor.
...that's been one of the major contributing factors to the backlash against Blair. Obviously, the war in Iraq is at the top of the complaint list. But it's the fact that Blair, for whatever reason, sold his soul to Bush that has kept the fire burning.

6. Another story with all the top 25
here. Quite a few entries are laughable - eg Wayne Rooney, literally. While he may be an interesting footballer to watch, he is a laughing stock off the pitch. He's known for temper tantrums and using prostitutes old enough to be his grandmother. He has no 'power' in Britain at all. There was some justification for putting Beckham on a list of power - he was followed as a fashion icon (he set trends in haircuts), and was put forward as a role model (until this year), for things like his 'new man' role as a husband and father.

I suspect the list was drawn up over a liquid lunch.

Having said that, there is a good case for Bush being the most powerful man in Britain - he's in charge of UK foreign policy, and could do a lot to the country with trade if he wanted. I remember a list a few years ago that put Clinton in the top 5.

14. I thought GQ had something to do with dressing well.
I think Bush's back bulge radio, and other assorted crimes against clothing should rule him out. Maybe Ann Coulter could be the most powerful man in Britain instead.
