U.S. Baptist group thanks God for 2000 dead Swedes.

RAW STORY has discovered that the Westboro Baptist Church leaders known for picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the young college student brutally murdered in Wyoming in 1998, have released the following statement regarding the tsunamis which hit Southeast Asia earlier in the week.

The statement, which was posted on their website Wednesday alongside dozens of other archived "press releases," thanks God for the tsunami and for the death of any gay Swedish vacationers who perished at the time.

----

I'm not particularly religious (mostly because of people like Phelps), nor am I a homosexual, but this is utterly disgusting. I can imagine most people would agree. Being from Norway I'm puzzled as to why our neighbors, Sweden, is singled out in particular.

I can't help but feel sorry for these hateful people. I mean, they obviously don't know any better. All they know is hate and fear, and this is what they spread around the world by saying things like this.

Like I said I'm not a Christian, but I am a reader, and I am reminded of something from Matthew 7:15-23:

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit."

Hate, fear and sadness are not good fruits. I wonder if this group of people have ever thought about that.

2. That group would not think about such things

Your thoughtful post reminds me that we do not live in a vacuum. In the US I think MOST people would think this particular church is hateful/crazy, never thinking that such foolishness would make news worldwide. As embarrassing as it is, it is probably a good thing so that more thoughtful people see what our reputation is becoming here!

4. And do they also thank God that the one thing that
does appear to have survived the tsunami are the moslem temples? That was on CBS early this morning.

7. About the moslem temples.

Put your life and your faith in God, but build your houses out of bricks.

5. Don't spend too much time puzzling over their motives....
They are brain-dead morons. Nothing they do makes any sense whatsoever.

It is pure un-adulterated hatred of anyone different than themselves.

Unfortunately, it is also a new craze that is sweeping America.

10. Fred Phelps: the face of fundie Christian bigotry...
He takes what Falwell said (about 9/11 being caused by immoral behavior), and cranks it up a notch or two (or a hundred) to apply it to this disaster.

It's like they don't understand ONE THING about Christ or his teachings...:grr:

17. They also love to spam people who disagree with
them. I remember when they continually jammed the phone line of a Topeka city official who said something angered them. I'm surprised that only 2 of them have been disbarred. I expect that more of them will eventually lose their licenses though.

Interesting; lawyers, prisons, and daycare (I wonder whose children?). What a combination.

16. I actually had the same feeling
that the government would not acknowledge it.

I wonder where Phelps & Co. get their money? Who supports them while they go around the country saying Swedes deserved to die in the tsunami, and New Yorkers deserved to die in 9/11?
