Pledged EU aid to Asia will hit €1.5 billion and proposals for a European ‘ending facility’ could earmark an additional €1bn for reconstruction.
The cash, over €1bn from EU governments and €450 million from the European Commission, will aid immediate humanitarian efforts and longer-term rebuilding in 11 Asian countries devastated by the earthquake.
Europe’s aid does include private charitable donations from EU citizens and companies – UK donations have already reached €140m.
Speaking at an emergency international summit in Jakarta, commission chief José Manuel Barroso announced an additional €100m for emergency aid.
