Dems ask McAuliffe to remain party chair
By WILL LESTER
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- Senior Democrats are trying to persuade national Chairman Terry McAuliffe to continue his service as party chairman, especially if none of the current candidates gains momentum in the race to replace him.

About a half-dozen candidates are in the race and a couple of others are considering a run for the position. It will be filled in February at the Democratic National Committee's winter meetings.

McAuliffe met privately Wednesday with several Democratic senators on Capitol Hill, and was asked again to consider serving for another year or two, Democrats say. McAuliffe's response was not immediately known, but he has been cool to such overtures in the past.

Democratic senators reportedly at the meeting included Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York.

11. HELL NO!!!!!
Who the fudge are these "senior Democrats"? What reality are they living in? Of course, they are DLC pink tutu weasels!

Another term for McAuliffe will spell the END of the Democratic party. He has been a disaster, and needs to be replaced ASAP. The same goes for that ineffectual Robert Shrum, Democratic strategist behind the "don't fight back, take the high road" strategy which worked "so well" for Gore and Kerry. Shrum and Terry Mac need to go, the sooner the better, and replaced by someone willing to take the fight to a different level.

Terry has only been good at fundraising, but then allowed over and over again the Republicans to define the terms of the fight. Stupid!

As far as I'm concerned these lightweights are not Democrats anymore; they should just go join the rethugs and get it over with.

It's time we had an elected party chair so all of us REAL Democrats had a say in picking our leadership.

15. Basically you just want Dems to be Republicans
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 10:10 AM by Julius Civitatus
Your little list reads like a wish list for the Republican party.

Why the hell would the Democratic party renounce (once again) its principles, leaders, and supporters in order to satisfy some half-assed perception of liberal stereotypes? Liberal stereotypes, mind you, created and exploited by the wingnuts. You want us to keep fighting on their terms, instead of getting the BALLS to change the rules and start fighting back.

What you are asking is to get on our knees and do everything the Repugs want, become Repug-lite, and keep losing elections.

Nice going.

Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 10:15 AM by Julius Civitatus
You are instantly assuming all the Republican propaganda and slander is true, and that Dems need to react to it by changing... according to Republican standards.

That's crap. The DLC has been doing that for a decade... and losing elections for a decade. It's time to fight back, instead of dancing to their tune, which is what you basically are proposing.

26. "Removing prayers from schools"?
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 10:35 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
Nice try, buddy.

Most schools in this country NEVER had official school prayer, including the red states in the Midwest and Great Plains. If you believe that they did, you're falling prey to Republican propaganda.

Unlike me, most current parents of school-age children weren't even born when the Supreme Court decisions about required prayer in New York State and required Bible reading in Pennsylvania came down. The New York prayer rules stemmed from fear of Catholic and Jewish immigrants and were an attempt to impose Protestant views on immigrants' children.

I was twelve years old when those Supreme Court decisions were announced. A small portion of the population screamed, "They're taking God out of the schools!" The rest of the population said, "Huh? Who has prayer in school anyway?"

It didn't become a wedge issue until the Reagan administration decided to make it so. By that time, you had a generation of parents who didn't remember what it was like "before."

Ii don't want the Dems to pander to the right on this issue. I want them to TELL THE TRUTH about it.

You are basically pushing Republican talking points as the basis for the Democratic platform. Most of these talking points are not even real issues (school prayer), but fake red herrings that the Dems keep reacting to. Time to turn the tables and stop reacting to their crap.

Since you keep pushing Repug red-herrings, I'll assume you must be a Republican...

69. did you see Reid's comments re Dean?
here's the person that the Senate Democrats chose to be their (and, by default, 'our') 'leader' (much to many of our disappointment); and, he's making such comments about a fellow Democrat and about us Democrats as:

"For right or wrong, Howard Dean is recognized as part of the left, so to speak -- the total anti-war crowd," Reid said. "I'm not too sure we need more acrimony."

He doesn't do anything to motivate me ... a lifetime New Deal

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1472459

We won't hear the other side doing such.

bitterness? is that right, Reid? Is that how you see us?
'the total anti-war crowd' ... imo those words are the kind that will only create factions; and, lead to another strong 3rd party.

I heard him speak a bit for the first time on a Daily Show clip ... sounded very weak ... that voice will not resonate the concerns of the rank and file ... I'm sorry to say it ... but, I'm just calling it as I see it.

not married, has a "funny" name...however, he would be a great chairman, and would probably lend much to behind the scenes moves to boost the party. We also need someone beyond a new chairman, who will start now with getting the media messages out...but who knows...without buying the media as the Bush/Rove cabal do, does the Dem party even have a chance?
Just my thoughts a la ellipses...

40. I doesn't matter who is chairman unless the leadership changes.

The DLC (founded and funded by conservatives) has done such a wonderful job of turning the party into repug-lite under the guise of moving us to the center, that I think it impossible to save it at this point.

Most, if not all, of the party leaders are now either DLCers or so afraid of the right that they just bend over to appease them.

Some of us saw this coming with Clinton, who made a big show of supporting all the social Dem policies while pushing thru NAFTA and all the other conservative economic policies that the DLC was created to enact.

There is one thing we must face, and until we do there is nothing that will take bush and his like out of power. We must face the fact that there is no longer a democratic party.

Let me ask you all a question. What is the purpose of the democratic party? Is it to get elected no matter who we have to emulate? Or is it to support the working people of this country, and make sure that there is some equality of opportunity between us and the power structure? If it's the second choice we certainly are NOT represented by the current democratic power elite. So just *who* do they represent?

THEY REPRESENT THEIR OWNERS, THE CORPORATIONS.

The same people that give them all the huge contributions for their campaigns.

Until we accept this one simple fact there will be no possibility of change. Things will go on just as before with the party leaders leading us around by the nose, while creating the laws their owners support and we continue to bitch, bitch, bitch.

96. A classic definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and
expecting a different result.

The Democratic Party is insane.

They should be put out of their misery.

I, for one, don't see why he can't continue to raise money with someone else being the chair, and the face and voice of the Party.

58. Terry Big Mack
Has built a data base that the democrats never before had, that is my friends how we brought in a lots of the money we got, from small donations..In my opinion he is the best, better stop fighting democrats and fight the republicans who are solidly stuck togeather at all time, no matter what their nominee or others do..What will the republican say when George take half of their S.S. they won't condemn him they will say well George had to do, SS was broke. fighat the republicans not democrats, other wise we will never win....Get behind Kerry & Terry or Dean whom ever.even if you want another person to be on the ticket next time, he is going to fight to clean up the election coming in 2008.

86. Idiots!
I love conspiracies...I think they are cool. But, I don't think this is one (my thought) is...the Democrats are selling out! They have lost, not only election after election, but their spines! I have never seen such wimps! They are becoming Bush Sr.! McAuliffe is an idiot! He doesn't know what the hell he is doing. We are a party being run by panderers and wimps!

88. My belief...
Is that there is no possible way he will be staying on as DNC Chair. I believe this is a very small minority saying this and somehow caught media attention. If its not Dean then it will be someone other than Terry. Bush uses the blind loyalty principle, I think we are smarter than that.

89. let's hope!
I have seen to much "compromise" on the part of the Democrats. I am sick of it! It is not compromise, it is selling out. We need a leader who will stand by principle, no matter if it is unpopular with the right-wing or the Shrub! I hope you are correct!

The Association of State Democratic Chairs is seeking a full-time chairman who will work from the party's headquarters and pledge not to run for office during the four-year term.

Maybe they're figuring Howard Dean is not finished running for office?
