Wash. GOP Demands New Governor Election
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- State Republicans Wednesday charged that hundreds of provisional ballots may have been counted on Election Day without being verified.

It's the latest in a series of allegations from Republicans who are pointing to flaws in the governor's balloting and demanding a new election. After losing the first two counts, Democrat Christine Gregoire beat Republican Dino Rossi in the third count by 129 votes out of 2.9 million ballots cast.

State Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance said an admission by election workers in King County that provisional ballots had been counted without verification is "absolute proof" of the need for a new election. The heavily Democratic county includes Seattle.

"It's enough right there to invalidate the election," Vance said. "This is a bombshell."

18. EXACTLY!!!!!! You said it perfectly!
We'll let them have a another Washington state election, if we can do the entire November 2nd election over with only paper ballots with which they can't cheat.

4. I love repubs.
First they attempt to block a recount. Now that they've lost, a recount is a good thing.

These stupid fuckers should listen to themselves. Someone in WA needs to ask them why a recount was a bad idea in November, but a good idea in December.

They know that if they go to a state wide recount the margin of victory for the Democrats will get even bigger. They want a do over so they can steal it again and get it right this time.

12. So, go to court and present a case boys
Or does the phrase that haunts the halls of Faux similarly echo in your brain: Wholly without merit.

This is an attempt, and a poor one at that, to win by faux-populism what they couldn't win at the ballot box or in the courts. Unfortunately, these weasels do persuade some slow-witted citizens (even a few who should know better) to join up in their cynical attempt to game the system.

Let's see, when the facts are against you, pound the law. When the law is against you, pound the facts. When the facts and the law are against you, pound the table. The GOP is about to reduce the table to kindling.

16. As a Washingtonian I've been watching
the GOP noise increase. I've heard that right wing radio is screeching loudly about this. I think their goal is two-fold. One is to discredit the Governor before she is even at work and the other is to paint the democratic party as cheaters. Same ole, same ole.... There are many lte in local papers telling the repugs to 'get over it' and 'move on' and referencing 2000 but I think state party leaders need to speak up. A republican secretary of state validated the election. If we had honest republicans like Sam Reed in Florida and Ohio we would have just re-elected Al Gore. I loved Sam Reed's scornful line that he wasn't Kathleen Harris!

24. Another Washingtonian here
It's also clear to me that the repubs don't have grounds to challenge the election legally (either through the legislature or through the courts). Otherwise they wouldn't have taken their fight to the court of public opinion. I think their goals are to #1. develop a myth of voter fraud that will take on enough life that they will get their re-vote or #2. to discredit Gregiore's win enough to cripple her term and prevent re-election. Face it, WA state repubs - you're officially the opposition party in this state. You can either cooperate or be cry-baby obstructionists. At this point they're doing the latter.

Vance is a nut-case. He comes up with a crazy lie daily that the papers print. I was glad to see the PI had moved his daily accusation from the front page (yesterday) to the front of the local section (today). Vance knows he's serving up bullshit - his only goal is to keep this alive and to plant doubt in the minds of the sheeple.

Go Sam Reed. Wonder if Reed will stay in the GOP or even politics after this.

22. Maybe somebody familiar the hand count process knows this.
If Vance's story is to be believed why were the provisionals not caught during the hand recount? Is there not some sort of visual marker that identifies provisional ballots?

Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 02:57 PM by govegan
Old "wet pants" Vance is a proverbial whiner.

Just weeks ago his favorite refrain was "the people have spoken, concede NOW Christine Gregoire. Let's move on."

Actually, the provisional ballots are indistinguishable from other ballots once they are removed from the accompanying documentation. That is a flaw in the system, because the optical scanners will accept those provisional ballots without any mark or action by an elections official. Of course, this flaw is courtesy of Diebold.

However, that flaw pales in comparison to the touchy-feely screens in Snohomish and Yakima.

26. watching C-span 1&2 on Ohio Objection
I mentioned it to my partner this morning before she left for work -- told her that I wouldn't be surprised if some GOPer equates objection to terrorism...

she said "what does that have to do with the election?"

me: nothing - but they will try to link the two together -- just wait and see

ok, so I'm flipping between c-span 1 & 2 -- and sure enough some GOPer stands up and says the objection to Ohio emboldens those who hate our freedoms.. (close enough to objection = terrorism in my book)

What could be more democratic about a voting process that allows the results to be questioned? If results are not verified and reviewed then what good are elections? Part of a democracy is the ability to question those in authority, to be able to speak out when you feel you have been wronged and to see redress for those grievances.

If anything -- the objection to Ohio electoral votes strengthens democracy because we are free enough to be able to disagree and to talk about it..

as far as Rossi goes -- I say go for it, open up that can of worms... make some noise -- but beware, according to Rossi's compadres in GOPerland - to object to an election means he is supporting terrorists who hate our freedoms

Now you know how it feels to lose a close election in an election system you don't trust. So maybe, just maybe you should work to change it like the rest of us. Write your Congressman or Congresswoman. Demand fair elections in every state. What's good for Washington is certainly good for Ohio.

Move on Loserman Rossi, you wouldn't want the world to think our American democracy was broken now do you?

 for Kephra
