Attorney General Nominee Hit for Prisoner Policy
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General nominee Alberto Gonzales came under blistering criticism from Democrats on Thursday at a Senate confirmation hearing focused largely on his role in formulating administration policies blamed for contributing to the torture of terror suspects.

"America's troops and citizens are at greater risk because of those actions," Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the committee's ranking Democrat, told Gonzales, President Bush's White House counsel.

"The searing photographs from Abu Ghraib (prison in Iraq) have made it harder to create and maintain the alliances we need to prevail," Leahy said. "Those abuses serve as recruiting posters for the terrorists."

Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, in a prepared statement, told Gonzales, "The issue of your commitment to the rule of law is what most concerns us."

Opponents acknowledge they do not expect to defeat Gonzales, but they hope the hearings will make Gonzales answer for his White House advice that parts of the Geneva Conventions on prisoner treatment were "obsolete" or "quaint."

Republicans were quick to rise to the defense of Gonzales....

Why is it hard for me to believe that there aren't enough Repukes to keep this criminal from being elected? Can it get anymore partisan?

They will elect and promote and hand out medals to criminals...

5. I love this... from his opening statements...
he did not ever come out and say he was against torture... he did not offer any horror at the Abu Grhaib actions, just at the pictures.

So, as long as there are no pictures, it seems abuses are okay with this shit head.

9. Listening, yes.... Just wrote Schumer (my Senator)
Dear Senator,
Please, please, please, DO NOT give Alberto Gonzales an easy ride through his nomination hearings. Stand proud, stay strong, represent New York and keep in mind we (NY that is) did NOT vote for Bush, we did not sign up for what Mr. Gonzales stands for, and many of us are watching this nomination closely.

The more this man speaks, the deeper the hole he digs. His judgement as Mr. Bush's attorney as both Governor and "President" is severely questionable. I do not buy his assurances that things "will never happen" with this administration. I am appalled at his dancing around controversial opinions which he has written and his outright and obvious happy glad-handing of Senators on this committee.

We have to draw the line somewhere. Senator Boxer will apparently do it this afternoon with voting fraud. Please inscribe another line for the GOP in the judicial field.

Thank you.

10. " I will no longer represent
only the White House. I will represent the U.S.of America and its people." sayeth Mr. Gonzales. This statemnt is a admission that he was willing to obey the corrupt directions of the Bush administration without giving consideration to the Pledge of Allegiance, laws and tenets of the U.S. of America. What a dictatorship requires most of all from its followers is strict allegiance to its dictates.
Gonzales doesn't qualify as an adherant to the laws of this nation and the world.
