Feds Slash College Grants

Feds slash college grants

Up to 75,000 low-income students in Mich. will see cuts or be disqualified.

As many as 75,000 low-income college students in Michigan will face cuts or elimination of their Pell Grants under changes in the way need is calculated this year.

The grants, given annually to 1.3 million students in public and private institutions nationally, provide $340 million to students in the state. Although the total number of recipients may increase, up to 90,000 of the nation's less needy students face disqualification and others will get less in federal, state and institutional assistance, according to the American Council on Education.

Hitting just as students begin to apply for financial aid, critics say the changes will narrow education opportunities for many when the nation's changing economy requires a more sophisticated work force. The estimated annual savings of $300 million isn't worth the damage it may cause, some say.

3. Been known for a while..
that Shrub "expanded" Pell grants by making fewer people qualify for them.

Only the wealthy and privileged deserve an education. Just like the old days.

Interesting to note that military recruiters are talking up the college money deal again. They just don't mention that only about a third of recruits actually see that money, but a backddoor draft is working as well as a real draft, so who cares?
