N.C. Judge Says He Expects to Be Asked to Step Down Over Ethnic Jokes He E-Mailed

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - A judge said he expects to be asked to step down over jokes about Jews, blacks and other ethnic groups he e-mailed to fellow judges, lawyers and friends.

Guilford County Chief District Judge William Daisy sent at least 36 e-mails between May 6 and Sept. 3 that included such jokes, according to information obtained by the News & Record of Greensboro. In some cases he used a computer in his office to send the messages.

Daisy, 60, said Friday that he doesn't find the jokes offensive, but that the subject matter doesn't reflect his views on minorities and the jokes don't reflect the way he runs his courtroom.

"The chief justice will probably want me to give up my position as chief," Daisy said, referring to state Supreme Court Justice I. Beverly Lake. (snip/...)

1. Well, DUH!
What the hell did he expect? "Oh, just because I send around RACIST jokes, that doesn't mean I'm a racist!!!"

DAMMIT, will the jugheads :spank: ever realize that not only must have good moral fiber when you're in such a responsible position, you *must also* APPEAR to have good moral fiber. That is, if something might be questionable because it might look bad, DON'T DO IT!!!!!

 :grr:

5. Some folks just like to excuse crass
and prejudicial behavior - its free speech, ya know. These folks ONLY object when people form opinions based on that behavior/speech.

I guess only the crass/crude and sometimes racist get to have free speech.

4. No... but it is often an indicator of how folks view
other folks.

Like the time a group was watching an olympic gymnastics competition, and someone cracked a funny about Dominque Dawes and her great Beam routine... its cause she's part monkey, that she doesn't fall off... :eyes: When noone responded... he assumed it was because they didn't hear him... so he said it again... LOUDER... and met with stony silence and stares. Thing is - he was prone to the "harmless" kind of racist jokes before, they should have warned us all how deeply he internalized them.

The bigger clue is that this judge sent these things out repeatedly.

But the real problem is that this guy is a judge. How many black, hindu, or other folks he slurred by category, standing in front of him are going to feel that justice will be served? How many will wonder if instead the judge will be prone to hear facts a certain way in order to have them "fit" his preconceived notions?
