Schumer: Democrats shouldn't protest Bush win
WASHINGTON -- Sen. Charles Schumer, fresh in a new leadership role among Democrats, found himself at odds with some of them Thursday, including Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, over a ceremonial counting of President Bush's re-election victory.

Schumer, D-N.Y., was tapped late last year to head the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and began the day touting the DSCC's lack of debt heading into the 2006 elections.

snip..........

"My view is that you don't hold up the election unless there is concrete real evidence of fraud. I haven't seen that," Schumer said Thursday.

In contrast, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., took to the Senate floor to thank Boxer for her move, saying the government needs to set higher standards for voting accuracy.

3...2...1...0!

Listen! Can you hear it? That's the sound of DUers typing angry letters to Schumer.

That Schumer "hasn't seen" the evidence of fraud? Perhaps he hasn't looked.

74. As far as calling: 1 (800) 839 - 5276 - TOLL FREE to Capitol Hill.
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 06:29 PM by calimary
It's the Capitol Hill Switchboard - where they'll transfer you, FREE, to any office you name - in the Senate OR the House.

I've made a few calls myself, today. Called Feinstein, my other California girl, and demanded to know where the heck she was, this morning, and WHY did I NOT see her standing WITH Barbara Boxer?!? Her staffer said Feinstein was doing what John Kerry recommended - sitting this one out in favor of working for "longterm voting reform." I allowed my voice to drip with sneers at this, and declared: NO, THANK YOU. THAT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. ABSOLUTELY NOT GOOD ENOUGH. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. Hey, DiFi, you've gotta TAKE A STAND. SOMEWHERE. Not someday later on when the fuss dies down and there really is pie in the sky. If you wait for that, it'll be pie in yer eye (and a vote, and campaign donations to whomever will be challenging you for the next Senate opening). Dammnt, I wanna see BALLS. Boxer-type Balls.

107. I'm With You... I've made lots & lots of calls
today to all the Democratic Senators. Biden's office was the nicest even though he said Biden was only going to push for Election Reform. However, he was terribly nice. Most of them just said thank you I'll let the Senator know.

One of the worst was Corzine, and Kennedy's office put me on hold then NEVER came back. I soon figured out how they handled irate calls. Putting you on hold is a "favorite!" I was really surprised by Kennedy & Corzien... I thought they were LIBERALS!

Don't think so... AND they're going to confirm GONZALES. WTF is happening. We need a REVOLUTION!!

Perhaps I'll come back down to earth in a few days, but I'm feeling so alone out here. Bill Nelson is such a Republican Democrat that will work to get him UN-ELECTED. What does it matter, we don't have anyone to stick up for us here in Florida anyway, why not just have another REPUKE!!!

happened if there weren't loads and loads and loads and loads of people agitating for it. Forgive me for the repetition - I've posted this anecdote elsewhere, too - but there were emails about this to the Dem-CA groups all day yesterday, exhorting people to come out, in full force, and call Barbara Boxer and URGE her to do this. That's because she'd let it be known (and this was quoted in the emails) that if enough of her constituents demanded this, she would, indeed, step forward. Well, looks like she got her mandate.

Storming the Bastille DOES work. It CAN make a difference. Don't let yourself grow so disgusted that you don't LET 'EM KNOW YOU'RE DISGUSTED! I called a few republi-CONS today, too, and gave 'em hell. Like the "good" Dr. Vivisection, bill frist. They NEED to know we are out there and that we are there in numbers too big to ignore (as they said in that song).

Don't EVER let your disgust (and I understand it completely, they've certainly earned it) keep you silent!!!

That's the moment when you should scream even louder, and make an even larger stink than before.

21. Done. Thought I'd share this time.
Dear Senator Schumer:

Today, I sincerely wish you would have had the "audacity" to back-up, rather than demean, all those who took a stand for "the people". Maybe, you no longer care about so many Americans who have become disillusioned and disenfranchised with the political process and who have seriously lost faith in the honesty and integrity of our government.

Nevertheless, you could have AT LEAST avoided diminishing those who demonstrated GREAT COURAGE in taking a stand for "the people" whom you and all your colleagues owe your allegiance. "Representatives" are not supposed to be so self-involved in their own political interests that they QUIT advancing democracy and QUIT furthering the best interests of the American people!

Hence, I simply write to express my disappointment of and objection to your actions, today. If you prefer NOT to be a beacon for our people, fine. However, the least you could have chosen to do is stay silent with respect to those who actively demonstrated their concern about the state of this nation and their passion for the American people.

Sincerely Yours,

Just Me

160. What a good point...
or a sad point?

We have heard so much outrage, especially by repubs, about the waste of time and the insult to our nation of this protest...
No evidence, conspiracy wackos

Which of them have stood up and spoken that way about the war?

Talk about waste...of lives, of $$$, of our reputation, of towns and on and on via the war.

Flimsy evidence, trumped up and not questioned...

But this protest was the threat, was wrong? They could vote to give the power for war?

I'm not adding to your point here, just seeing the irony for the first time. It is...really a good comparison. Thanks

They make it sound like two Dems are at each other's throats on this, when that's not the case at all.

I saw two Democratic Senators speaking out in defense of voting fairness today, not two opponents.

And yet -- also as usual -- many of us will take this nugget from the MSM as gospel truth and promptly begin devouring our own.

Why is it that the only time we believe the media is when it's pitting us against each other? :(

receiving end of this, and if they thought for one instant that their precious was defrauded, what do you think THEY'D be doing at the moment? Obediently going back upstairs to bed like good little boys and girls? Hell no! In fact, the last time they thought the electorate was being unfair to their widdle pwecious, they ran sniveling and crying all the way to the Supreme Court.

NO MERCY. NO COMPROMISE. Or at least - only as much mercy and compromise AS THEY SHOW TO US. Which, as we all know, is NONE.

100. Well, they should have done this WAY before November. Like perhaps
November 2000. Boxer's only fault is being four years late in getting around to this.

But, NO. NO move on. It's not 100 percent certain that this election WAS valid if there are this many questions about it, if there are this many shenanigans that people either don't want to talk about or don't want to report, and certainly don't want to investigate. Most of this, most Americans don't even know about, because most of them, as yet, don't get their primary information from the internet. They eat what they're served every day from the limbaughs and Pox "news" channel people of the world, and do not EVER see alternative views, let alone evidence of fraud.

HOW DO WE KNOW this election was valid if there's to be no investigation? If everything is quashed and silenced and those who dare to raise questions are told to shut their traps and go upstairs to bed like good little boys and girls? HOW WILL WE KNOW?

Frankly, I don't know, myself. But I've seen enough, cruising around the net and through here at DU to know that something smells REALLY bad. REALLY bad. Downright fishy. And it needs to be looked into.

WE MUST RAISE QUESTIONS. At least we now have some leadership. God Bless Barbara Boxer. I dug out my Boxer button and pinned it back on today.

146. Speaking of the "other way around"
Imagine this scenario:

A presidential election hinges on one state - Ohio.
The electronic voting machines are manufactured by a company owned by George Soros.
The computer code is a "trade secret" owned by Soros, which no Republicans are allowed to examine.
Soros is quoted as saying "I'll deliver Ohio for John Kerry".
Kerry wins Ohio by a margin of 2%. Yet exit polls showed Bush winning by 2%.

One thing is for sure, the Republicans would not "get over it".

152. This was not about Kerry.
This was about democracy and voting rights in our country, and a concern for transparency in elections. I don't want to see anyone committing fraud on the people. Do you? Some of us are frightened that our votes do not count. We just want to know that they do count...and that they are given to the candidate we choose. That is NOT too much to ask. I don't want a fascist dictatorship. I want a democracy in my republic.

Perhaps the "swing voters" can donate their money & time to Schumer's next campign or to the DNC.

We lost the last 3 election cycles b/c we thought "playing along" rather than standing up for truth would somehow impress "swing voters"- I aint buying that failed "strategy" anymore.

51. Probably b/c there was no fraud on the part of DEMS.
If there had been, you could be sure that the same party who was unafraid of "what it would look like" to Impeach Clinton would have made a fuss about it.

Again, you base your argument on the false assumption that "DEMS do it too, or would do it."

73. I hate to say it, but Dems do do it to...there are liars and
cheaters on both sides, and they both should be prosecuted. I believe there was a Dem arrested in Ohio right after the election.

DOn't get me wrong, Republicans are scum...the whole Clinton impeachment illustrates they will stop at nothing to achieve power.

I just don't think fighting the election at this date helps the country, and that is not a good thing.

If your presumption is true, then all the more reasons for Republicans as well as Democrats to support an investigation.

Excuses, excuses. I dont want to be im the party of excuses anymore.

How are you so certain of whether or not this courageous action will "alienate future swing votes"?

Whatever your understanding of politics, sir, I humbly disagree with your conclusions.

45. I respect your opinions...
but it is bad for the country to hold up the results of a VALID election over this partisan nonsense---and that is what this is---nonsense.

We lost, get over it. There are mid term election less than 2 years away that we should focus on.

Venting on a message board is fine, but I wish our beloved leaders would move on and try to win next time around.

Hmmmm.

There were those who indulged in dreaming about a best case scenario (still do,...right now, I am dreaming of the most embarassing impeachment in American history,...delicious). Hell, our hopes and dreams is what keep us fighting though.

All we really wanted was for our "representatives" to show the courage to take a stand for democracy, for "the people"!!! Witnessing that courage to take a stand for us,...is inspiring!!

67. Which takes us back to the poster above who corrected me..
this is not about "fighting for the little guy" it is about inspiring the base (I was worried about swing voters). So, in that sense, maybe that is a good thing...

However, this whole mess, in the end is nonsense. The voting machine problem can be addressed. I think it is bad for the system to hold-up a valid election (considering the thing was done in November).

76. I'm not sure what you mean by "this whole mess",...but, I am very grateful
that these brave "representatives" had the guts to step out of the "politics as usual" (which most every American just HATES) and take an impactful stand for our people.

What they did may have made all those caught up in the entirely too entrenched political game very uncomfortable; but, I say to them,...well, I say to hell with those who are unwilling to take risks which really are noble.

So, that's all I have to say.

It was an interesting discussion.

70. Nonsense to uphold the rights of minority and low-income voters?
Since when? And if that is nonsense, what wouldn't be? If that is nonsense, how can we call this a democracy?

And btw, I sure hope that "beloved leaders" is sarcasm. I am not in the habit of referring to my elected Representatives as "beloved leaders." And I consider neither Schumer nor Clinton, who are my Representatives, to be "leaders" of any sort at the moment.

159. Bullshit--that's what everyone said in 2000, and again in 2002
We have no idea whether we won or lost. There is no proof of fraud, but there damned well is plenty of info to solidly establish probable cause for it.

If a dead body turns up in your back yard, that fact by itself is no proof whatsoever that foul play was involved. Does this mean that no investigation should take place? That you should just get over it and move on, because it is obviously impossible to bring the dead person back to life? If the score is 100-75 with 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, does that mean that the referees are entitled to stop calling fouls on the grounds that the outcome is pretty well determined? I am certainly glad that Senator Boxer and 32 Congresspeople thought otherwise about our possibly compromised election, and value the integrity of our voting system enough to call fouls when they see them.

We dont have "evidence" b/c it has not been FULLY investigated. What we do hgave are literally hundreds of examples of "glitches" and "irregularites" that occurred nation wide. Surely enough to warrant a FULL investigation to see what else happened.

If some of the "glitches" & "Irregularites" favored Kerry as you claim, then all the more reasons for hypocrite Repubs to SUPPORT and investigation. So thats no excuse.

Your argument is based on the false premise that "DEMS are doing it too, or would do it, so lets give Bush a free pass"- Bullshit.

Holding up the certification would have been a great, in-your-face, agressive way to get this issue on prime-time TV and in the papers.

This was our chance to bring national attention to it. The fake DEMS failed- the REAL DEMS gave it a shot.

We need to stop worrying what "what we will look like" according to the GOP/media and start fighting.

"Swing Voters" like fighters and people who clearly stand up for their values, and they would come around if we stood up for a change- other wise they will stick w/ the GOP, as they have done for the past 4 years.

Bush will be inaugerated Jan 20, there's no way around it Constitutionally.

But that doesn't mean election reform is dead! Why do we automatically assume that just because repugs control DC all hope is lost? It isn't.

The vast majority of Americans want honest elections. We just need to frame the argument in a way that appeals to a basic American desire for honest elections.

The place to start may not be DC but in the states since Constitutionally they are supposed to determine how elections are conducted. That may not be the best solution but it may be a first step.

contrast, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., took to the Senate floor to thank Boxer for her move, saying the government needs to set higher standards for voting accuracy.

110. Benjamin Franklin said it briefly and eloquently...
"We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."

This is as true today as it was 225 years ago at the signing of the Declaration of Independance. Schumer better get his head out of his butt, and this party needs to coalesce around a central figure. I don't know if Barbara Boxer is the one, I'm not as familiar with her as I should be, but, we need someone with strength, vision, and an appeal to EVERYONE in not on the Democratic Party, but, the independents out there as well, for without them, we are but 40% of the vote.

Seriously, we need a gravitational force to gently guide the various segments of the party towards a common goal, but, to do it steadily, and easily. If you yank to hard on the rudder, you might rip the damn thing off, and then we're all screwed. In here, I LOVE the fire and brimstone, in the outside world, we need Clinton's guidance and common man attitude. Schumer can take his millions and jam them up his tailpipe for all the use I have of that clown. Hold your dumb press conferences, Chucky, no one listens anyone. Guy's a gas bag.

lately - along with another one I just forgot while typing this - having another senior moment.

That is very applicable to our current situation.

The way some Democrats kiss bunkerboy's ass all the time and again are about to "trust" the lies spewing from Gonzalez's piehole are astounding - simply astounding.

But what I've been pleasantly surprised about is my senator Harry Reid - didn't think he could ever step up to the plate. Maybe I've "misunderestimated" him!

We shall see.

125. We don't know with certainty that outright fraud took place
What we DO know is that Kenneth Blackwell tried every legal trick in the book to help the Republicans win in Ohio (ie. enforcing an arcane law concerning voter registration envelope weights). We DO know that he did absolutely nothing to make sure that many traditionally Democrat urban polling stations had enough voting machines for what he and everybody knew would be an unusually large turnout. And, of course, we DO know that Blackwell prevented observers from monitoring the Warren Cty. polls, claiming some utterly unsubstantiated "terrorist threat".

Again, we have no smoking gun. But there's plenty of smoke, and the source is clearly emanating from Ken Blackwell. I get the feeling that many Democrats are hesitant to call on Blackwell's dubious behavior (and they have a responsibility to do so) because Blackwell is African American. It's going to take more than the black Congress members and Barbara Boxer to get the ball rolling on a full investigation of Blackwell.

Schumer is technically correct; we have no concrete evidence. But he should be screaming at the top of his lungs for an investigation of Blackwell and what happened in Ohio.

I want every fucking Congresscritter and Senator have to vote ay or nay on this simple description of what happened in the 2004 presidential election.

That's all. Then they have to stand by their vote when they certify the election results.

Or how about:
"Voting machines may arrive with 3000 extra votes for Bush."

Dear Senator:

You and John Kerry have abandoned me and the 57 million voters (those who were not black and thus had their votes counted) who tried to stop Bush from his murderous path to destroy America and all that it should stand for.

I am no longer a Democrat. I will now register as a Republican, so at least I can try to comfort myself to thinking that maybe there is such a thing as being a "Good Nazi."

Go beg for money from your corporate paymasters from now on. I'm all spent out with what little cash I could spare. Now that my hope for the future has been sold out by you and the rest of you Democrat cowards, I just can't give anymore.

Hey Chuck, WE brought ya to the dance - remember us?

It blows my mind to see a blue state senator, especially in NY, roll over for this admin.

I'm in freakin' Texas and our dem reps are fighting daily for survival down here. They freakin' left the damn state under cloak of darkness to foil the nefarious plans of one Tom DeLay, who then sent a federal posse to OK (no safe haven for dems either) to round them up and arrest them (and their poor staffers). They were lucky to not have been shot on sight at the state line.

If our way outnumbered dems are going kicking and screaming even though they could be run out of town on a rail tomorrow, why is a high-profile senator from a safe state CAVING??? He should be knocking the shit out of this administration!

Sorry for the rant, it's just hard to be holding the line down here with no reinforcements from the Northern Calvary!

Very, very sorry to know how he's been doing business lately. Maybe it's a brain tumor! (Maybe he got an anthrax letter sent to his home! Maybe he had an overly bumpy plane ride! Sounds like he's gone over the hill, looking for Zell!)

165. He and every other so-called "Democrat" who didn't stand up and support
Boxer and stand side by side and vote "Yea" for the measure to reject the Ohio vote is in my opinion a spineless coward who has more concern over his career than a loyalty to the people who have given blood for this party and to the common person who on Nov. 2nd did not get their voices heard. Concrete evidence? There is a lot of evidence, but we need a thorough investigation...with out support and a united Democratic Party on this issue, "concrete real evidence" will never be able to be exposed...

Hillary atleast gave a great speech, but she alas didn't back her words with her action....

I am so disappointed and frankly disgusted by these so-called Democrats, I am no longer going to be a member of the Democratic Party. I switched my registration on Friday. Thursday's actions or rather inaction by the Democrats was enough for me - the exception ofcourse being the 34 brave Men & Women who courageously without concern for their careers, stood up, spoke out and didn't back down in their defense of the Constitution to which they took an oath. I'll do whatever I can to support those people...Meanwhile the Schumer's can go to hell for all I care...Maybe like in the Senate hearings for Gonzales, they can all stand in line to smile at the man who will be in charge of our Justice Dept. and kiss his ass and rubber stamp his nomination with their lips...I hold each and every one of them accountable for letting this country slip away into the hands of a one-party system led by Bush.

175. I understand, but I personally wish you hadn't done that...
Why? Well, besides the obvious, there's a good chance the party will be making note of how many people left the party around this time. And will naturally assume that if it happened *around* this time, the far more major event they will be associating 'this time' with will NOT be Chucky-duck's bushkissing.

Do I need to spell out the rest of this thought? Even if you wrote a letter, nobody's going to be matching up names of people who wrote in along with the stats they gather...

Again, I understand the sentiment (very well, unfortunately), but I'm sorry you chose this time. That is all. I hope you come back :(

Looks like "democrats", to begin with all bigwigs, did not, do not, and apparently won't, protest the violation of fundamental democratic principles in this country. The best these so-called "leaders" can do is apparently painfully poop contorted and prudent statements to the effect that "voting accuracy" should be improved. So that, on the whole, Schumer merely describes what actually happens. Chances are he was asked to do this. This whole deal is literally to puke!

188. dolstein I'll tell you what's "looney"
"looney" is suporting Schumer since he has had his lips plastered to bush's butt since 9/11. Forget about the funds promised to NY that never arrived here, Schumer sure did. Forget about the EPA under bush's direction deliberately lying to NY'ers about the safety of their air & water, Schumer sure did. Forget about planes buzzing the Statue of Liberty or people gaining illegal access to JFK by boat, Schumer sure did. Forget about Wyoming getting more funds than NY from Homeland Security, Schumer sure did. Forget the "Trifecta joke" and bush selling photos of himself on 9/11 to profit the GOP, Schumer sure did. Forget soldiers coffins being hid, while the remains of 9/11 victims were used in bush's political ads, Schumer sure did.

You know, only a "loon" would keep their mouth shut and accept all of this. And only a "loon" would be afraid not to speak up when they don't like what their "representative" is doing in hopes of changing things.

How looney is Schumer to have "forgotten" how it doesn't bother Republicans to overturn someone who was "duly elected" like Grey Davis? Or Rossi now contesting in Washington State?

Just because there is a (D) after someone's name doesn't give them a free pass. Alot of people have been forgiving and forgetting, well those days are over. Alot of us, have had enough. Schumer's butt kissing has gone too far this time. Boxer showed more guts than this "loon". Supporting blindly gets you nowhere. If we want things to change, we have to make our displeasure know.

And I am very displeased with your "loon", feel free to go join him, you both can attach your lips to bush's butt.

190. maybe these guys are
saying inexplicable things because they know the fix is in and there is nothing anyone can do to change it - the corruption is so deep and broad - heaven help us all.

195. I will vote for Hillary, again, despite her vote on this
But I've totally lost faith in Schumer. I saw him on "The Daily Show," just after the election. When he was asked about it, he didn't speak to the fraud and underhanded tactics, especially in Ohio, but only shrugged.:grr:

Kick for Kephra! Thanks for posting this. What will we do in LBN without you?;(

196. Plainly, Schumer Sucks!
I'm a Democrat, and have always been a Democrat, because it is the party who, instead of being politically expedient, are those who do the right thing

When I saw Schumer's partisan influence on the Waco debacle (one of Clinton and Reno's most serious lapses in judgement), he lost me forever.

We're not perfect, but the way to guard against future transgressions is an honest evaluation
NOT sugar-coating it because it happens to be one of our own sins, as opposed to how "they" whitewash theirs. If it's wrong, it's wrong no matter who is the perpetrator.

IMHO of course :)

197. Schumer needs to define fraud. There is plenty of evidence that the vote
in Ohio was not fair. It was unfair in so many ways as to constitute a fraudulent election. The Ohio electors cast their votes irregularly. It is his DUTY to contest the vote. Schumer is a feckless dweeb.

200. Of course the vote in Ohio was not fair or equitable
Khephra was right on with this. Schumer has been totally out of the picture with this and I don't know if I can ever vote for him, again. Hillary spoke well during the hearing, though voted with the cowardly majority, so I am on the fence about her. *sigh* What's wrong with our representatives and why are they afraid to truly represent us?!

Kick for Khephra!:kick:
