Former Denver mayor criticizes Bush's Social Security plan

COLLEEN SLEVIN
Associated Press

DENVER - Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, one of several candidates vying to lead the national Democratic Party, said Friday that President Bush's proposal to overhaul Social Security would hurt the nation's most vulnerable.

Webb was in Atlanta for a forum with members of the Democratic National Committee. Three similar forums are scheduled before DNC members pick a new leader in February.

The White House has proposed allowing workers to put some of their payroll tax contributions into personal investment accounts. Webb said that would damage the safety net created by the Social Security system during the Great Depression, hurting senior citizens, the disabled and orphans who depend on payments.

"I think it's an issue that is making Franklin Delano Roosevelt roll over in his grave right now," Webb said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.
