Powell Mum on Genocide in Darfur, Sudan

<snip>

NAIROBI, Kenya - Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) on Saturday declined to say whether Sudan was still carrying out ethnic genocide in Darfur, but warned that the government could face U.N. penalties if the violence in the region continues.

Powell also said a hard-won agreement to end the fighting between Sudan's government and southern rebels could provide momentum for settling the conflict in Darfur, which is in the west.

After a tour of tsunami-ravaged countries in South Asia, Powell was in Kenya's capital to represent the United States at Sunday's signing of the peace deal settling the conflict in southern Sudan. The United States and other countries helped push the two sides to end the fighting, which was blamed for more than 2 million deaths, primarily from war-induced famine and disease.

Powell expressed no reservations that his presence was lending U.S. imprimatur to an incomplete solution in ethnically divided Sudan.

"I think this agreement stands on its own merits," Powell said at a news conference with the top rebel leader from the south, John Garang, and Sudan's vice president, Ali Osman Mohammed Taha.

2. no one cares about this horror
for years the muslims have been killing and trading christian`s of all ages and sex and the godly christian right has said nothing. i suppose cause the color of their skin and they have no money to contribute they are not worthy to be saved. we as a nation cannot save everyone and now under bush we no longer have the" moral authority" to condem any other nation. sudan and other nations who decide to slaughter themselves and others no longer have to worry about a our great nation doing anything about their practices....unless there is oil and minerals.

3. I gotta get some rest. Reading the headline, I thought
this was an article about Colin Powell's mom's opinion on genocide.

4. Let me get this straight
1) Powell was there and had nothing to do with the ceasefire, yet the local news reported it for about 90 seconds with pictures of him in it

2) We WANT the UN to go in to fix this, because it's just not important to us?

3) We sent a guy who made the leaders in Sudan and our own allies angry for daring to call the worst humanitarian crisis in the world "genocide", but then to make them happy, he just doesn't talk about it this time?

Good God, and with him leaving, we are now going to get Condoleeza?

This is truly hopeless.
