Etna erupts again
Etna erupts again

Jan 9, 2005

Mount Etna in Sicily has begun spitting fire and ash in its first volcanic activity recorded in more than a year.

The fissure opened up in a previous crater on the southeastern slope, 700 metres below the summit, spewing lava and a cloud of black smoke.

3. Yes, I believe it depends on the composition of the magma
Some volcanoes erupt rarely, but very explosively (e.g. Mt. St. Helens), while others erupt fairly frequently but not that dramatically (such as Etna). I think it depends on the viscosity of the rock and the amount of gas that can be trapped.

Although Etna has been variable throughout history.
