Samarra election commission members resign

TIKRIT - All of the members of the High Election Commission in the Sunni-majority city of Samarra resigned Saturday in support of a call to boycott upcoming elections from the Muslim Clerics Association, one of the most influential Sunni Muslim groups in Iraq.

“All the 24 members of the commission in Samarra have resigned to support the association’s call,” a member of the commission who refused to give his name told DPA.

<snip>

Among those who have resigned was the senior election official for the northern city of Mosul.

Meanwhile in the al-Alam area, 15 kilometres north of Tikrit, gunmen attacked a school on Saturday which is supposed to be used as a polling centre during the election.

According to police sources in Tikrit, the attackers destroyed the school. The source added that three handcuffed and blindfolded bodies were found in the al-Dour area near Tikrit. The three had been shot dead.

4. I keep thinking about that story.
The Baghdad merchant said, "I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me." Sadly, he was wrong, of course. Hard to outrun death, I guess. Especially there, especially now. Thank you, Mr. Bush, for bringing Democracy to Iraq and freeing it from that evil dictator Saddam Hussein. <sarcasm>

2. So that's Mosul & Samarra; 2 of the 5 largest cities in Iraq.
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 07:42 AM by LynnTheDem
Baghdad is of course the largest city, and is one of those "only 4 provinces" that Rumsfailed says is maybe too violent to be able to vote.

And of course Najaf (Shia) and Fallujah (Wahabe) are razed to rubble.

WOW.

Free poll under military occupation under a foreign army under martial law with 2 of the 5 largest cities having no election officials and a raging war in the largest population city, the capital!

Now WHY would ANYONE doubt the legitimacy of such a poll! :eyes:

3. Have the "authorities" given all the
goats and sheep "voting cards" - since the most populated areas are not "secured".

Stupidity and stubbornness will not make for a legitimate election.

This will be similar to the June 30 "handover" - an abject failure.
