Party Leader Killed in Iraq (manager of INA - Allawi's party!)
The manager of the Iraqi National Accord party, headed by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, was assassinated Sunday near his home in Baghdad.

Sources close to the party said masked gunmen tailed the car of General Jassem al-Obaidi, who was accompanied by his daughter, and riddled him with bullets.

They said his daughter, who was on her way to school, was seriously injured and was reported in critical condition in a Baghdad hospital.

The assassination of al-Obaidi comes three weeks before the general elections and is part of a series of assassinations in Iraq that has killed hundreds of political, security and military officials.

Armed men Saturday abducted Ali Ghaleb, the mayor of the northern Salaheddine province, and Qahtan Hammadi, an aide to the province's governor, in southern Baghdad.

Iraqi security sources said the authorities were still searching for their whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military in Iraq said an American soldier was killed when an explosive device blew up during a patrol in a Baghdad street. No further details were provided.

Two Iraqi police were injured by stray bullets from a U.S. military patrol Saturday night after a roadside bomb exploded in southern Baghdad.

1. How many in leadership does this make? It seems like I read
about one every two or three days.

7. Three weeks to go, and you can bet the various insurgent factions...
... are spoiling to destroy these elections that anyone with half a brain knew six months ago were not feasible.

I have this awful feeling that we're going to be hearing stories of wholesale slaughter on the Smirk-mandated Iraq Election Day...

... but then, what more can you expect when Mad King George is allegedly running the show?

10. Same here. I had to check the date
he died to make sure it was not a repeat of something I had already read.

4. Aw, no biggie. What is it that Bush calls this? Desperate acts of
a losing small minority of insurgents.

The puppet Allawi has lost his right hand puppet. And I see Sammarah is closing down its electorial office.

Soon Scotty will come out and say, "The elections are still a go".

5. I think it was Juan Cole who pointed out that if INA can't defend itself
How can Allawi possibly defend the 9,0000 polling stations on January 30th?

13. They already had the election back in Washington
Bush and a few members of PNAC/BFEE voted, that is all that counts. However, they will want a bit of a Potempkin village election later this month in a few areas near the Green Zone, just for CNN.

6. Allawi has got to really be an idiot. He really has no power, he can't
ever walk in public again, and he has to be shitting bricks everytime he hears a loud noise. Not a family member or friend or fellow collaborator is safe.

He thought he'd end up as the new boss. He'll probably just end up as blood and brains on the pavement.

15. Has anyone been assassinated
while surrounded by U.S. paid mercenaries? (I don't think so, but I really don't know.)

18. yes there have been quite a few.....
I know this by going through the yahoo photo links from AP,AFP and Reuters. None of the mercenary deaths are reported. Unless of course something outrageous like a human barbecue happens!

8. Perhaps, "the people" don't want anyone associated with BFEE,...
,...to be in leadership.

Perhaps.

12. Oh, you nattering nabobs of negativism, you.
Democracy is a messy thing. The worse things get, the better they are. The insurgents are mostly Saddam supporters, angry Sunnis, and outside agitators. We're gonna win this war and bring democracy and freedom to the Iraqis, and then we'll march proudly on to Iran, Syria, maybe even China. The people love us.

How do I know all this? My dears, I am Marlene Dietrich.

14. The assassinations are only going to increase in the next three weeks
AS we get closer to the election the insanity of these attacks will seem minor. We should all expect something MAJOR here before the election it's like watching some ugly futuristic sci fi movie. BattleshipIraq or something to that effect could be the name of the sci fi hit all Repukes would flock to see, and YES Kool Aid would be served.
