Nussle announces intent to run for governor (Iowa)
I can't believe I'm going to use this phrase, but it is the only one that sums up my feelings about this news: Gag me with a spoon!

U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle became the first Iowa Republican to take formal steps toward running for governor next year, filing documents Thursday announcing his intent to seek the 2006 Republican nomination.

By filing a statement of organization with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, the Manchester congressman can raise money and spend it on staff, office space other costs related to running for governor.

"Congressman Nussle has spent a lot of time since the election traveling the state," Nick Ryan, Nussle's campaign manager, said. "He'll be doing stuff like that and really attacking the areas he's not as well known, continuing to meet with activists and opinion leaders and line people up. So far, the reception's been great."

Although the eight-term House member from eastern Iowa is the first in his party to make an official move toward a 2006 run, others who are expected to seek the nomination can organize without extra paperwork.

(continues with speculation on who else will run)

2. In a way this is good news. Hopefully, he will lose in the Governors race

but this means there is a very good likelihood of a pick-up in the House.

I already posted this in two other forums today but here is more info from MyDD

"IA-01 becomes likely pickup in '06 - Nussle to run for Governor
by laddy

Jim Nussle (IA-01) has filed his paperwork to raise money for his likely run for Governor in '06. This will likely to mean he'll vacate his seat in what should be friendly Democratic turf. The seat has potential to be a pickup, as Gore won the district 52-45, and Kerry won 53-46.
Just a little background on Jim Nussle: he's chair of the House budget committee which helped Bush crash the budget in last 4 years and now he's intent on bringing his fiscal policies back to Iowa. He's also one of the members of congress who recently helped tuck a provision into the omnibus bill that would allow him to transfer $333 thousand dollars from his Congressional Campaign Committee to his Gubernatorial Campaign. Most recently he voted to essentially gut the House ethics panel to protect Delay, himself and other Republicans with ethics investigations in the future. He'll continue to chair the Budget committee and most likely raise money for his campaign account because of his chairmanship since Iowa has no contribution limits. Can anyone say reform?"

The Republican Gubernatorial primary should be crowded and promises to be dirty, though Nussle should be considered the favorite in the primary because of his stature int the Republican party and a threat in the general since he hails from Democratic Eastern Iowa.

It definitely sounds promising. I'd love to pick up a Congressional seat and kick his ass in the Governor's race.

Who would run for his seat?

3. I'd love to see Swati do it
Of course, I haven't spoken to her to see if she has her sights set any higher than the Iowa legislature. She would make an excellent representative.

Here's hoping that Nussle gets his butt kicked. I know I'll be doing my part to help it happen.

her. She definitely had the most ads going during the last two weeks before the election - "Swati Dandakar(sp)" and, of course, it is rather distinctive.

Does she live in Nussle's district?

5. Yeah - she lives in Marion
She's in the Linn-Mar School District and began her political career by serving on the Linn-Mar Board of Directors. Here's a link to her biography: http://www.swatidandekar.com/biography.asp
