Many in politics raise red flags on rush toward electronic voting systems
"The National Organization for Women in Arkansas is trying to persuade Secretary of State Charlie Daniels to hold off purchasing touch-screen electronic voting machines until the new machines are proved trustworthy. "I love computers," said Lisa Burks of Hot Springs, vice president of legislation for Arkansas NOW and president of NOW’s Hot Springs chapter. "I’m not a technophobe." "

But the desirability of DRE machines came into question with the July 23 release of a report by researchers — three at the Information Security Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and one at the computer science department of Rice University in Houston — who said Diebold Election Systems’ Accu-Vote-TS voting terminal could be easily hacked into over a telephone line transmitting election results. They also said the results could be tampered with. Diebold, based in North Canton, Ohio, said the researchers reached faulty conclusions because of technical misunderstandings. For example, the company said they used an outdated computer code for the company’s touch-screen software. It’s a complicated debate between some computer scientists, who warn that touch-screens are untrustworthy, and state and local election officials and manufacturers, who contend they are reliable.

1. BBV kick
~snip~

"PLAYING ON FEARS?" The problem is that they came up with a neat, easy solution that really complicates the process and makes the process worse than the problem they are trying to solve, "said Doug Lewis, executive director of The Election Center in Houston, which works with the National Association of State Election Administrators." The problem is that they are able to play on fears, and they are able to make sound-bite statements that play to those fears when the answers that we have take longer to explain, "said Lewis. Miller said she’s not aware of much documented evidence that a voter-verified audit trail will improve the integrity and security of electronic voting systems."

"Voters could walk out of the polling place with their paper receipt in hand, instead of putting it in the lockbox, she said." That could lead to vote-buying by candidates, "she said, referring to the possibility that voters might present the receipt to a candidate’s supporters to be paid for voting for the candidate.

Buying a printer to produce the receipts for each electronic voting machine would be an added cost and would be another possible point of failure for the process, Miller said. The electronic systems record the votes cast on them in their electronic memory and must be able to produce a paper record with vote totals and a record of each ballot cast to comply with the federal law, she said.

" You already have a paper audit trail, "Miller said." The difference is the voter doesn’t actually hold the paper

Are not most voters use to dropping a piece of paper in to a locked box after voting? Isn't that one of he jobs of the poll workers now? To make sure no one walks out with a ballot?
Just how dumb to they think the average American voter is, anyway?

I'm begining to think the repugs directly equate IQ & wealth while they keep trying to prove the inverse is true.

7. Without fair and free elections
we are no longer a democracy. Decisions regarding elections are made on the local level. The state officials and companies like Diebold are strong arming the SOEs in the whole country. So it is up to us to make sure our SOE's know what is going on. If your SOE buys the bs and wants to install these systems, then it is time to make sure that person is replaced in the next election. All SOE's must be held accountable and uphold the highest standards of the law in this matter. We can not allow them to get away with anything less this time around.
