Couple goes on eBay for medical bill help
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FRANK_THE_TUMOR?SITE=TXSAE&SECTION=BUSINESS&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- David Dingman-Grover decided Frankenstein would be a good name for his tumor. The 9-year-old figured if he could get over being scared of a monster, he could get over being scared of this thing at the base of his skull.

David is determined that Frank isn't going to beat him. To phrase it like his parents do, "Frank Must Die." They even put those three words on a bumper sticker that they're selling on eBay to help pay David's medical bills.

By early Saturday, the online auction site had received 33 bids for the "Frank Must Die" bumper sticker. The highest was for $6,000.

EBay closed the original auction Wednesday, citing numerous rules violations. Spokesman Hani Durzy said auctioneers are not allowed to advertise that money for their items will go toward a cause. The family amended the ad and had a new version up and running the same day.

Here's the link to my wife's auction. All proceeds go to David.

10. Check out the yellow bar on the top of your screen
Other causes are posted about with frequency. And, as libs and dems, we support candidates who oppose weakening societal safety nets and (most of us) who favor some version of nat'l healthcare.

Welcome to DU.

12. I'm still not sure what you mean
There are members here from all over the world who are involved at the community level in food drives, shelters and clinics if they're able, but DU isn't a conduit of funds for its own specific "action group" for the needy, as far as I know.

If you want to get hooked up locally or if you have an organization that needs volunteers, you could probably ask in the State Forums or in Activism/Events.

9. I have said for years
that something is wrong with our health care system when we are called the wealthiest country on the planet, yet we see collection jars in convenience stores for help with medical bills.

6. However..........
this Washington Post article describes the parents as "born-again Christians who believe their son's fate rests not with doctors but with God."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A48374-2005Jan4.html

I find this scurrying to get money for their son's medical coverage inconsistent with their alleged religious beliefs.

But, I hope the kids makes it. He sounds like a fine little boy.

8. Hell, you probably are aware of my feelings toward this particular ilk...
But for the kid and the idea that helping someone that needs help should not be requisit of a particular belief system... I'll play. If I'm ripped, I'm ripped.

:toast:

13. I wonder if people feel like they need to say that now in the US
That they are Christian. With born again being the preferred brand. It seems like absolutely everything that is on your media from soap operas to dramas to the so-called "news" can't go without invoking the lord's name at least once during the program. And usually not just a small invoke.

14. I think you're probably right
But I also think it's selective perception at work, as well. You're so aware of it now, you're seeing it in more places.

Think of the boxer making the sign of the cross before the bell rings.

Think of the tight end in the end zone, having scored a touchdown, kneeling, making a public spectacle of his "devotion to the lord," and, ostensibly, saying a prayer of thanks.

I've always been amused by the uniquely American idea of sports teams praying to god for victory before a game. Consider that the other team is doing the same thing. Exactly how idiotic does that gesture become?

We were born because of religious persecution and we're going down because of religious intolerance. Who would have dreamed all of this would be accompiished in so little time?

Frankly, if someone didn't get their own birth right the first time, they're too goddamned stupid to get anywhere near me.
