Moderate volcanic earthquakes rocked Taal Volcano on Sunday, causing some residents to flee the area for fear of a possible tsunami, ABS-CBN News learned Monday.

A Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology report said the first earthquake occurred at 7:45 p.m. and registered intensity 3 on the Richter scale. An intensity 2 quake was also recorded a minute later.

1. I can understand people being jittery
But a magnitude 2 doesn't amount to much more than stomping your foot.

5. But, if you don't know the scale and epicenter?
A 2.0 quake with the epicenter in the Philipines is one thing. However, when the ground is shaking under your feet, you may not realized the scale of it. As far as you know, it could have been a 10.0 with the epicenter a few hundred miles offshore, with a 45 foot tsumnami coming next.

8. Fair enough, they didn't know where the tremor's epicenter was.
Their concern is justified, I suppose. For what it is worth, though, Magnitude 2 to 3 quakes occur hundreds of thousands of times per year somewhere or other on the earth. So, I hope the media doesn't overdo it on the reporting.

10. It's a "hot topic", so they probably will.
Like how they reported every shark attack a few summers ago, even though the rate of occurrence wasn't any higher.

2. They always have small quakes in the Phils
they have several active volcanos there so small magma movement tremors is quite normal

7. I'm on dial up and it took a few hours.
when I have big downloads, I start them before I jump in bed. I am a light sleeper so I check on it to see if it has finished.
