Gunmen assassinate police deputy
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 01:53 AM by cal04
GUNMEN have assassinated Baghdad's deputy police chief outside his home in southern Baghdad.Brigadier Amer Nayef was shot dead along with his son as they left the family home, a police spokesman said.

Iraq's fledgling security forces have borne the brunt of attacks by insurgents, who accuse them of collaborating with US-led forces in the country.Elsewhere in the capital, a suicide bomber driving a police car blew himself up at a police station, killing at least three Iraqis and injuring many more, a police source said.

The powerful blast in the Zaafaraniya area in the southern part of the city sent a column of black smoke rising into the sky, a police spokesman said.

The powerful blast at the police station in the southern Zaafaraniya area also injured wounded police officers, the police source said, and the death toll could rise.

BAGHDAD, Iraq Jan 10, 2005 — The deputy police chief of Baghdad and his son, also a police officer, were shot dead Monday, and a suicide car bomb detonated inside a police station courtyard, killing at least four policemen, the latest violence ahead of the country's landmark election.

Scores of police and regional government officials have been assassinated in recent months, part of the insurgents' campaign to try to instill fear ahead of the Jan. 30 vote and to hunt down people who are perceived as collaborators with the U.S.-led coalition. Last week, gunmen shot dead the governor of Baghdad, Ali al-Haidari, and six of his bodyguards.

On Monday, Brig. Amer Ali Nayef and his son, Lt. Khalid Amer, were assassinated in Baghdad's south Dora district while traveling in a car on their way to work, said a spokesman for the interior ministry, Capt. Ahmed Ismail.

Gunmen sprayed machine-gun fire from two cars which were driving parallel with the police chief's vehicle before fleeing the scene of the attack close to his home, police said. The two were alone in their car.
