Sister of Venus and Serena Williams Shot to Death

Sunday, September 14, 2003

LOS ANGELES  — An older sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams was fatally shot early today in Compton, the sheriff's department reported.

The 31-year-old woman, whose first name was not released, was gunned down about 1 a.m. today in the 1100 block of East Greenleaf Boulevard, said Deputy Richard Pena.

Deputies believe at least one suspect in the case may be barricaded near the same location, Pena said.

A sheriff's Special Weapons Team was at the scene.

8. NOT Venus OR Serena, older sister
Like I said, not a thing on AP about this but Faux does have it. She was murdered in Compton, where they all grew up.

9. TRAGIC
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 01:15 PM by BeHereNow
That is so tragic.
Any link? What happened?
I swear, it feels like all the good souls are
being sucked off the face of the planet and
the shitheads just keep thriving- like energizer bunnies or something.
I am deeply saddened to hear this.
They were actually good role models for
young women, unlike the idiot pop stars and sitcom
princesses flouncing about the media.
So sad that two young women who actually
had something valuable to offer are gone,
and we are left with what? Britney Spears?
Damnit.
BHN

Edit: Just read it was NOT them, but their sister-
STILL it is tragic news and will no doubt have
a terrible impact on them...I can't imagine losing
my sister in such a senseless way.

15. No...
Venus and Serena were not killed.

Their older sister was.

I wish the original poster would fix the headline.

According to CNN:

BREAKING NEWS Yetunde Price, the oldest sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, fatally shot in Los Angeles suburb, according to publicist for Serena. Details soon.

Uh CNN, you may want to check on that. NWA may not agree with that assessment....unless it wasn't Compton?

Compton's just on the outskirts of LA, therefore a suburb of Los Angeles.

:-(

Dear God, what a tragedy... OMG! Mina, thank you for posting this!

My thoughts and heartfelt sympathy are with the Williams family today. Their family has contributed so much to the cause of African-Americans and Women in sports today. How positively unnecessary this tragedy is. :-(

Shocked,
Jennifer

14. Gunshots heard, she died at hospital
Police heard gunshots and arrived at the scene, but she had already been transported to a nearby hospital where she died of the wounds received. Police surrounded the building with suspects inside. I think that the building is still being surrounded.

The details are sketchy at this point.

Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 01:25 PM by Scairp
They have nothing at all. This from the stations that see fit to show every single police chase that happens in the area. Will check again.

God forbid they interrupt football to speak of a murder. I can't believe they have nothing about this.

21. The people most likely to be killed by violence are
young blacks with the rest of their lives ahead of them. They may be in a neighborhood in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a co-worker friend of mine was. It's sad that the violence of so many urban areas hurts black young people so much.

It can go from a decent neighborhood to dangerous in less than a block.

My condolences go out to the Williams family. This is horrible.

what a tragedy. I love the Williams sisters. Does anyone know if this older sister was one of the ones who was on Oprah? I remember seeing that show and I came away really appreciating that entire family. How awful.

Sister of Venus and Serena Williams shot to death

Associated Press
Published 09/14/2003

COMPTON, Calif. --An older sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams was shot to death Sunday, and sheriff's deputies surrounded a house where three suspects were barricaded, authorities said.

Yetunde Price, 31, of Corona, was gunned down shortly after midnight in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton following a confrontation with some residents, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Butler said.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

At about 6 a.m., about 40 deputies surrounded a home where three people believed involved in the confrontation were barricaded, Deputy Richard Pena said. No arrests were immediately made.

32. Compton is a very bad place...
...I read the whole family moved away, which is for the best. No details in the article why the older sister moved back.

I am SO not a fan of the Williams sisters--I cheer for whoever plays against them, but this is just too awful for words. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I've live in L.A for twenty years. I dont know the details of this tragedy but as a rule, I try to avoid all confrontations, traffic, neighbors, salesmen, etc., even to the point of being perceived as a total wuss.

I too live in the Greater LA Area, and I have adopted the same pacific attitude as yours. If "perceived as a total wuss" means staying alive, then I am Queen Wuss.

34. She did not move back to Compton
She lived in Corona, a fair piece from the L.A. area. I should know because Corona is considered part of the area I live in, the Inland Empire, which is east of L.A. They family lived there and I'm quite sure she still had friends there.

Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 05:56 PM by noiretblu
this is from the article...and it should be east, not west. the williams family used to live in Compton. so did my family...back in the sixties and early seventies. it was one of the places black people could buy pretty nice homes back then, and the schools were decent then too. i have (mostly) fond memories of growing up in compton.
