WASHINGTON — The U.S. Defense Department has decided to embark on the development of an interceptor missile and will seek to begin talks with Japan this year to move the joint research of the missile defense system to the development phase, Pentagon officials said Monday.

The updated missile system is under a joint research program between Japan and the United States. A Pentagon official said it will probably take at least three to five years to move the advanced missile to the production and deployment stage. (Kyodo News)

2. Japan IS a missile interceptor
We attack North Korea.

The missiles are intercepted by Japan.

Japan becomes a "vast sea of radioactive glass."

Bush walks away happy.

Of course, our OTHER option is to use SDI to intercept missiles over Canada, in which case the nukes fall harmlessly down on nothing but Canadians.

Bush walks away happy.

4. Just because you shoot down a nuke doesn't mean it goes off.

Nukes need to go through a series of events to detonate. If you take out one event, the entire thing is disarmed.

Countries have to do this, because they last thing they want is for the nuke to detonate on their own country if it is loaded on a faulty missile.

8. I think you miss his point.
Japan itself is the missle interceptor.

Along the lines of the saying: "there's going to be two hits. My fist hitting your face. And your face hitting the ground."

As for intercepting missles, it's all bullshit anyway.

5. The real reason for this agreement is
to get Japan to fund the cost of development, test and production of the next generation of missile interceptors.

And if North Korea remains a threat, Japan will get it own missiles based on this shared financial development/production. They may produce their own missiles based on the technology they partially funded.
