Two held in £26M robbery probe
DETECTIVES were yesterday quizzing two men over the £26million Belfast bank robbery - after reports that one tried to buy a magazine with a £100 note.

The pair were held after a shop assistant tipped off cops, who found they had £18,000 in Northern Bank £100 notes in their possession.

Police were checking to see if the notes match the serial numbers of those stolen in Britain's biggest bank robbery just before Christmas. <snip>

2. Now released: thought to be another case
Two men arrested with a large quantity of Northern Ireland bank notes have been released on police bail after detectives concluded the haul was not linked to a massive robbery last month.

A total of 42,000 pounds was recovered after police arrested the pair and raided two homes and business premises in Banbridge, southwest of Belfast, on Monday.

"It is not believed the money is linked to the Northern Bank robbery," said a police spokeswoman on Tuesday. "It is believed the money seized may be linked to other money laundering offences."

Police had been called after a large number of Northern Bank 100 pound notes were used to buy low value items at a shopping centre in Craigavon, 20 miles from Belfast.
