Science Panel Issues Report on Exposure to Pollutant

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 - In an eagerly awaited report on perchlorate, one of the most controversial unregulated toxic pollutants in the country's drinking water and food supplies, the National Academy of Sciences said Monday that people would be safe if exposed to daily doses 20 times those under consideration by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Depending on how federal and state regulators interpret the academy's recommendation, the Defense Department, its contractors and other federal agencies responsible for contamination from perchlorate, a component of solid rocket fuel, could avoid cleanup costs of hundreds of millions of dollars.......


.....Pentagon scientists, using the same human studies that underpinned the academy's report, had concluded that the maximum safe level of perchlorate in drinking water supplies was 200 parts per billion.....


Large doses of the chemical, in widespread use by the Defense Department since the 1950's, have been shown to inhibit the thyroid gland's ability to take up iodide from a person's diet. Insufficient iodide has been linked with impaired neurological development, but the report said that the evidence the panel examined "is inadequate to determine whether or not there is a causal association between perchlorate exposure and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in children."

1. Can we all say healthcare crisis?

This planet is blanketed with neurotoxins. The way they get into our air, water and food is spelled out exactly in this article "inadequate to determine whether or not there is a casual association." This crap has been done for testing of all chemicals - where neuro damage has been found - they just don't have enough data.

Think of Alzheimers; Parkinsons; dementia; learning disabilities in children; lowered IQ in children and adults; brain cancer; Gulf War Syndrome;

3. What if the people/corps that profit Had to Eat/Drink the Rec. Amount for

10 years, undergo massive testing, and if zero traces were found in their body, they then could unleash it into the water/food/planet?

That , of course will never happen.

Our only hope is that eventually , the only people making these decisions, will be the children growing up now, witnessing the horrific choices, and vowing to do everything organic. Or developing pretty outrageous immunity...

Uhh, could they PLEASE stop poisoning everyone/everthing now, while we still have a planet?

4. The return of cretinism?

I have a simple solution to the problem of casual attitudes toward pollutants by those with authority to do something about them: require the owner of the factory to live downwind of it, require the US president to drink the water his appointees claim is safe, and require that their children be exposed as well.

If Christie Todd Whitman and her children and their children had been made to live in New York in the immediate aftermath of 9-11 and for the next several months, I somehow don't think she would have been quite as ready to agree with * that the air was safe to breathe, do you?
