Anti-abortion protesters have been warned to leave their crosses at home. Parade performers will have security escorts to the bathroom, and they've been ordered not to look directly at President Bush or make any sudden movements while passing the reviewing stand.

Groups planning demonstrations during the inauguration festivities are already smarting from security restrictions. Anti-war protesters with the A.N.S.W.E.R Coalition have complained that large sections of the parade route have been set aside for Bush's political contributors and supporters and will be closed to the general public.

The anti-abortion Christian Defense Coalition, which is also planning a demonstration, has threatened to sue the government because the Secret Service recently added crosses to its list of objects that are banned from the parade route.

Besides weapons, other items on the banned list include coolers, folding chairs, bicycles, pets, papier-mache objects, displays such as puppets, mock coffins, props, and "any items determined to be a potential safety hazard."

The extra-tight security is less to protect bush* from international terrorists than to protect him from eggs, tomatoes, and protest signs from American dissidents. I just wonder how ANSWER will get to demonstrate its displeasure, and if protests will be shown on mass media. C-Span is the channel of the day, I guess.

Washington DC is being asked to pay for the costs of protecting the king, instead of the coronation committee paying for it. For a good read on this, go to www.bluelemur.com. So, DC's Homeland Security funds are to be used, not the inauguration's commitee's. Bah.

As an aside, I am going to the Jazz Funeral for Democracy in New Orleans on Inauguration Day, sure hope it gets some media attention. There is another Funeral in Portsmouth, NH that day. For days now, the job at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County has been to follow the order from the White House through the Secret Service and down to the park workers:

"The president's feet are not to touch the dirt."

So all yesterday, large crews drawn from all county parks worked to ensure that, as always in his life, George Bush's feet do not touch the ground when he appears in the big park today.

Bush arrives for a fund-raiser at a restaurant in the park. That is indoors and he doesn't have to worry about his feet there. But he has to go over ground to an administration building where he is to meet with families of 9/11 victims. After that, he has to go over more ground to get to the site of a memorial to the victims.

He doesn't want his feet on the ground and he will be at a groundbreaking ceremony...
