GOP bid to stall Gregoire is turned back
Democrats foil move for delay in confirmation
By CHRIS McGANN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER CAPITOL CORRESPONDENT

OLYMPIA -- On the first day of the legislative session, Senate Republicans made a rushed attempt to persuade lawmakers to put off Democrat Christine Gregoire's gubernatorial confirmation for two weeks while a court challenge to her slim victory is heard.

They failed, but the Republican Party said its case for nullifying the election and getting a revote gets stronger by the day. GOP Chairman Chris Vance said yesterday King County Elections officials had exaggerated the extent to which they could explain discrepancies between the number of votes counted and people credited with voting -- a key component of the Republicans' legal challenge.

Vance said the actual gap was 2,400, double what county election officials reported Friday. King County Elections officials said Vance was the one exaggerating, but acknowledged that the number was greater than the figure of about 1,200 they gave on Friday.

...

On Friday, King County reported the gap between the number of votes counted and people credited with voting at just over 1,200. It said this was consistent with numbers in past elections and was due to a variety of reasons, including clerical errors.

...

Rossi's legal challenge is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Friday in Chelan County Superior Court. Whoever loses will inevitably appeal to the state's high court.

1. I don't want to offend anyone
but once the opposition candidate has been sworn in, it's time to put the weapons away and fight another day.

3. that only counts
when the "opposition candidate" is a Republican. then we owe it to the country to move on. After all there are no "perfect elections."

Of course, when it's a Democrat who wins by a slender margin, go to the courts, the papers, and whine till you're blue in the face.

Or should I say, red in the face.

5. maybe the Republicans can win in court,
but wouldn't they then set a legal precedent that might come back to bite them in the ass. Oh, I forgot that the courts are a paid subsidiary of the republican party, never mind.

6. How come
..."the Republican Party said its case for nullifying the election and getting a revote gets stronger by the day."

Why does this seem to work for them? Where are the cries for 'tinfoil hats' and conspiracy theorists?

$10 says this makes it to the MSM. And people are outraged.

10. This will go all the way to the Supreme Court.
I'm betting the GOP gets it's way on this too. I've seen too much to believe the law will be even handed. The double standard that favors them will prevail. It will happen mark my words.

11. It won't go to the Supreme Court
This is a state matter. They also don't want to reopen the can of worms that was Gore v. Bush. Another election case, and they won't be able to claim Gore v. Bush as a one time ruling with no value as precedent.

15. It's amazing!
When it's a Re-puke who has been declared the winner any attempt by the Democrats to over turn the election is whining and being a sore loser BUT when the table are turned and a Democrat wins there is foul play. They should just rename the party The Hypocrit-O-Gans.
