Wave of Potential New (Republican Recall) Voters Has Yet to Materialize

Republicans and independents are adding more new voters than Democrats heading into the Oct. 7 recall election, but with nine days left to register, a wave of potential new voters envisioned by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arianna Huffington and some other candidates has not materialized, according to county election officials.

Republicans claim that, in the four months ended Aug. 31, they added about 80,000 new potential voters, compared with 20,000 newly registered Democrats, in a state with a voting population of more than 15 million and a significant Democratic edge.

The Times Poll, meanwhile, found that just 2% of those considered likely to vote Oct. 7 will be casting a ballot for the first time. That's a smaller proportion of new voters than the 7% the poll measured about this many weeks in advance of last year's regular gubernatorial election — and far from the deluge of new voters some had predicted.

3. But getting them out to vote is hard

Newly registered voters are hard to turn out. They join the rolls. But getting them out is key. And since they were apologitical and not involved to begin with then getting them out is very hard.

Also they need to be careful that they are not unwittingly registering voters for the opposition. Voter registration should be done in high performing (65+%) precincts that have a low total of voters per eligible population. Otherwise, if you do it in other places, you might just be helping the opposition.

4. The article says that Democrats are trying to get exisiting voters out

In the article they talk about the fact that the newly registered voters may not actually make it out to vote. Republicans are concentrating their efforts on getting new voters, while Demcorats are trying to focus on getting proven voters out to the polls.

I wonder how many people Arnold has signed up to vote who don't even know what form they were filling out? Some of them probably just did it because Arnold is a celebrity. "You want Arnold's autograph, first fill out this form." Try to get those people out on election day.
