DIA Says Pakistan Backed al Qaeda

Pakistan helped al Qaeda launch its operations in Afghanistan in the 1990s and secretly ran a major training camp used by Osama bin Laden's terror network, according to U.S. intelligence documents.

The documents, produced by the Defense Intelligence Agency in the fall of 2001 and declassified in a censored version this week, also indicate that legendary Afghan guerrilla commander Ahmad Shah Masood may have been killed two days before the September 11 attacks because he had learned something about bin Laden's plan and "began to warn the West."

...

"Through Northern Alliance intelligence efforts, Masood gained limited knowledge regarding the intentions of the Saudi millionaire, Osama (bin Laden)... to perform a terrorist act against the US, on a scale larger than the 1998 bombing of the US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania" and "began to warn the West," said one of the reports.

---

Commentary: add the warnings from Masood to the warnings of at least a dozen foreign gvmts before 9/11 that a major terrorist attack on the US was imminent, yet the US did nothing in response. They didn't even take simple steps like warning the airlines or putting more fighters on patrol, even though most of these warnings indicated hijacking attacks.

Accounts of this DIA report in the Indian and Pakistani press add more details of Pakistani complicity with Al-Qaeda:

2. Well what wonderful timing...
that in the past few days it's been "supposed" that our good buddies in Pakistan are to thank for the tip that has let us once again narrow down Osama's location to 40 square miles.

8. Who Killed Daniel Pearl?
This is an excellent article by Laura Rozen which discusses Pakistan and Saudi Arabia's roles in funding and backing terrorists groups.

9. Hell, didn't we aid them in the 70-'s-80's?
We trained and armed them to fight the Russians and trained and armed Saddam to fight the Iranians. So we get to point a finger at another coutnry who made bad alliances over 10 years ago?

10. warning
I think people here are making good points about Pakistan and the ISI. But also note that Masood warned the US about 9/11. So many people knew about 9/11 before it happened that it's getting to be positively absurd. 9/11 must have been the most wide open secret of any terrorist attack in history.

11. I suspect Masood was seen as a threat by the U.S.
for being too strong of a leader. His death fits a pattern of cleaning out the competition before installing the puppet.

(Shortly prior to this last war on Iraq, a very popular Kurdish leader was assassinated too, and it was blamed on Al-aqsa.)
