Prosecutor Says He'll Show Ex-Officer Lied

LUBBOCK, Texas - A former undercover agent who sent dozens of blacks to prison on bogus drug charges refused to admit he stole gas while working as a sheriff's deputy, despite records to the contrary and an eyewitness to the theft, a county attorney testified Tuesday.

The former agent, Tom Coleman, is accused of lying about his arrest record in hearings for four defendants in 2003. If convicted of two felony charges of aggravated perjury, he could be sentenced to 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. Prosecutors dropped a third charge Monday without explanation.

Coleman, the lone drug agent in the discredited drug busts, told Cochran County Attorney Jay Adams Jr. in a November 1997 phone call that he had not stolen the gas.
