5. I've been re-watching Band of Brothers on DVD...
...first time since seeing it in '01 (the orig HBO broadcast). Its relevance to me now is ten-fold, as it portrays a realistic view of war and warfare.

At least the men of Easy Company were fighting a just war. The men in Iraq are dying in vain.:(

Hit.

US troops murder tribal chief.

US occupation troops killed Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Razzaq al-Ku‘ud,
the chief of the ad-Dulaym tribes in Iraq at 12 noon as he
came out of his house in Hit in western Iraq. The
Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported witnesses as
saying that American forces were waiting at the end of the
main street leading to the Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Razzaq’s house
and opened fire on his car, killing him and his son i
nstantly.

The Americans wanted to hold talks with the Resistance
in secret in order to save face. But Shaykh ‘Abd ar-
Razzaq refused to go along with the American plan
and publicized their offer as well, telling various news
media about it, including Mafkarat al-Islam. Mafkarat al-
Islam reported the story, but kept the Shaykh’s name
secret.

The local correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reports that
the cities of ar-Ramadi, Hit, and Hadithah are now in a state
of boiling rage over the assassination and that the
Americans have brought out all their vehicles out of fear
of attacks.

10. More IRR 011105 Violent battles in village near ar-Ramadi
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 10:11 AM by jmcgowanjm
In an update posted at 1:15pm Mecca time the
correspondent reported that Resistance fighters in the
village were continuing to fight US troops with knives, sticks,
and their bare hands after their ammunition ran out.
Despite their situation, the Resistance fighters had encircled
a troop of US forces in the al-Kartan area, and were not
letting them out. Six US soldiers were stabbed or beaten
to death with bayonets and rifle butts. Women in the area of
the river have been encouraging the Resistance
fighters, supporting them and pulling the bodies of their
dead into local houses to protect them from the
Americans.

In a report filed at 1:25pm Tuesday, the Mafkarat al-
Islam correspondent indicated that fighters in ar-Ramadi
had shot down a US Apache helicopter over the Euphrates
River. The craft was on its way to aid US forces cut off in
the village of al-Jazirah. The crew of the craft were killed
instantly.

The correspondent reported that the Resistance had set
10 various US vehicles ablaze with gasoline after their
crews had fled. A second column that advanced to free
an encircled group of Americans in al-Jazirah village lost four
of its vehicles destroyed – two Humvees, a tank and a
personnel carrier. Twenty six Americans were killed
in as-Sufiyah, according to witnesses. The remaining
Americans are advancing towards al-Jazirah, but there
are reports confirming that the puppet so-called “Iraqi
national guard” and puppet police had refused to join
the Americans, despite orders to do
so.

In a dispatch posted at 9:15pm Mecca time, Mafkarat al-
Islam reported that heavy armed clashes broke out on
Tuesday at 3pm in the village of al-Jazirah in the as-Sufiyah
area near ar-Ramadi. Witnesses reported that the battle left
a US column of 30 vehicles destroyed and wiped out. A total
of 128 American troops were killed, the witnesses
reported. Resistance forces seized 89 American
weapons, dozens of bullet-proof vests and
helmets.

The head of Iraq's intelligence service Gen
Muhammad Shahwani now puts the number of insurgents
at 200,000, of which 40,000 are said to be the hard core(as
in SpezNatz trained)and
the rest active supporters.

These figures do not represent an insurgency. They represent
a war.

Anthony Cordesman, an analyst with the Center for Strategic
and International Studies in Washington commented: "The
Iraqi figures do... recognise the reality that the insurgency in
Iraq has broad support in Sunni areas, while the US
figures downplay this to the point of
denial."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4145585.stm

Officials said the General Staff has sought to obtain
U.S. approval for the operation in northern Iraq. But
Washington has not provided implicit
approval.

"The current phase is to show the United States that
we're serious," a Turkish government source said. "After the
Iraqi elections in January, the Turkish military will be ready
to move."

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/november2004/121104turkeywarns.htm

But the United States has failed to move against the
rebels saying that it cannot afford to open a second front in
Iraq when its forces are fighting Iraqi insurgents.
Washington's stance on the PKK issue has
sharpened anti-American sentiment in Turkey that has
been running high ever since the U.S.-led occupation of
Iraq.
