FBI-style prosecutors plan

PLANS for a dedicated cadre of prosecutors to put crime gang leaders behind bars were revealed by Lord Goldsmith, the Attorney-General, yesterday.

New laws will also put into statute a formal system of plea-bargaining for offenders to encourage them to plead guilty and turn Queen’s evidence.

Prosecutors would be able to grant immunity from prosecution under the new FBI-style package of prosecution powers.

The lawyers will work alongside the new Serious Organised Crime Agency to put organised criminals “out of circulation”, Lord Goldsmith said at a conference in London.They will also be responsible for implementing the new powers to bring previously untouchable “Mr Bigs” to justice.
