Aberdeen: Local draft board members needed
http://www.aberdeennews.com/mld/aberdeennews/news/10625260.htm

The Selective Service System is looking for men and women to serve as members of local boards that are currently in a standby mode. A prospective member must be a United States citizen, at least 18 years old, registered with the Selective Service (if male), not employed in law enforcement, not an active or retired Armed Forces member and not convicted in any criminal offense. snip

"Local board members are uncompensated volunteers who play an important community role closely connected with our nation's defense," says a news release.

If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 local and appeal boards throughout the nation would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements or exemptions from military service, based on federal guidelines and community standards.

Anyone interested should contact Sonny Magnuson at (605) 484-2554 or Wayne Asscherick at (605) 484-9355 or visit www.sss.gov and click on "Board Member Application."

1. Here is a pretty good editorial about the Draft. It will happen soon
http://www.cheboygannews.com/articles/2005/01/10/news/opinion/opinion2.txt

From the end...

~snip~

Lt. Gen. James R. Helmly, chief of the Army Reserve, wrote in an internal memorandum to the Army's top uniformed officer that the Reserve has reached the point of being unable to fulfill its missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and to regenerate its forces for future missions.

Not only is the Reserve falling behind in its mission to provide combat support, medical care, transportation, legal services and other support in Iraq and Afghanistan, it also might not be ready to react to future hot spots should they erupt, nor is it prepared to step in domestically in case of an emergency.

If America's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan continues much further beyond the national elections scheduled later this month, some hard choices are going to have to be made.

Among them is reinstatement of the draft. And that should send chills down the spines of young men - and women - who are of draft age today.

and the department website immediately took the add off the website.

It's-a-comin'

Glad I'm 36 and not 26!

2. they don't even pay you to send people to die?
I don't think there will be too many guidelines fir deferments and exemptions. I think this is a friendly ruse to make people think they could save some of their friends. Other than that I don't think they're going to get a lot of "volunteers" unless they guarantee deferments for the volunteers of course. It might fly in shrubville but in NY hopefully they'll have to have a draft to reinstate the draft.

Every DUer with a snowballs chance in hell of getting on the board should take a stab at it.

9. Wonder what kind of Oath is required?
Bush loyalty oath? Oath to uphold the Constitution? If it's just the usual defending the Constitution stuff, you could gum up the works and not violate your oath.....

21. I already applied for a spot
I applied on-line and was sent an application. I sent in said application and was notified that in the near future they would call me for an interview. They thanked me for my interest. I did this because I figured I could stay on top of the story. When I hear anything or get an appointment for an interview i will post.

33. I applied.
I filled in an application just a week or so ago. I have not heard anything back from it, we'll see if I do.

I'm pretty our front locally as being both an active Dem as well as a local government employee. I'm wondering which one will win out--the liberal image or the government wonk image...

I dunno if it will do any good, but I figure those kids deserve at least ONE friendly face on this board.

Ya know, if it feels like a draft, sounds like a draft and looks like a draft....

I'm having a hard time believing Bushco when they keep insisting that "there will be no draft!"

Please. Yep, there will be no draft.....until the day we start the draft....

6. It'll be called something else...usual bushspeak.....
and it'll be dressed up as an "opportunity" to do community service, or some such drivel. One good thing though, it'll be the end of this war once he starts reaching out and touching the children of those SUV driving repukes....but then again, they'll all get deferments, no? Then I guess it'll be the poor and working class....hmmmm, draft riots maybe?

8. Congress has its Doomsday Plan, draft boards are cranking up
One would think Syria and Korea must be getting edgy. And I hear Cuba found some oil.

One little LIHOP and the neocons are all set and they are sure as hell making sure enough people are pissed at us that LIHOP is getting more likely.

14. You are right I am afraid.
The only way a draft will be received well by the general population is for another LIHOP/MIHOP. I guess that is what we have to look forward to in the spring.

17. Originally wrote MIHOP, but didn't know if that fell too far to the wrong
side of the new anti-conspiriacy rules around here.

Yes, MIHOP is most likely in the works. Wasn't it reported that Cheney was changing his 'focus'? He had enough of pretending to be concerned about America during that grueling (for him) campaign.

Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 10:28 AM by Ernesto
Back in the '70's, after plenty of beers, he confided in me: His aunt was a board member And that was why he was never drafted.
Just one small fringe benefit for being an "uncompensated volunteer", I guess.

31. watch out, everyone
I went to fill out the application so I can keep my son and his generation out of the coming crap, but the last qualification is having never been convicted of ANY criminal offense. Be sure it doesn't happen to you between now and then--places to be arrested will include protests, looking at * during the inauguration (which we all know is against the law now), or something trumped up just for you.

40. Wow, I got the application already.
I just registered last week sometme-- after I saw a thread on here about the Draft Board. I got the application in the mail either yesterday or today.

They are not kidding--they DO want people on those boards as soon as they can get them. THAT single thing scares me more than anything else I've seen about a probable draft.
