Gregoire sworn in as Washington governor (pic of protestors)
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 05:35 PM by RamboLiberal
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2002148856_webgovernor12.html

Christine Gregoire, winner of the closest governor's race in Washington history, was inaugurated today, but faces an immediate court challenge that could make it a short-lived honor.

"Change is here and more is coming," she said in her first official speech.

Democrat Gregoire, 57, a scrappy three-term attorney general who took on the tobacco industry and polluters, took the oath of office before a joint session of the state Legislature. Minority Republicans had battled unsuccessfully to delay her inauguration for two weeks.

Republicans in the House Chamber rose along with cheering Democrats to greet her swearing-in, but did not join in the applause.

Steve Linderman of Bonney Lake yesterday gives a thumbs-down to supporters of Christine Gregoire and urges a revote. Gregoire supporters and opponents gathered outside the Capitol in Olympia as the Legislature certified her as governor.

As an airplane flies overhead displaying a banner that reads notmygovernor.com, Delores Tulfo, left center, and Peggy Hubler, right center, and other supporters of Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi demonstrate outside the state Capitol in Olympia.

Course they're saying the same thing about us because of the ongoing implication of Ohio being stolen. I don't think so, FL was stolen, Ohio we just got flat out beat.

But yes, they're complete and total hypocrites to be whining about Rossi, that's partisanship for ya.

10. If all of the people at the rally pitched in $2000 each...
then we could pay for a re-vote. Instead, the rest of Washington doesn't feel like paying $4 million.

It's just one of those "fiscal responsibility" things that "conservative republicans" can't seem to grasp.

They just can't take that Gregoir was actually voted in through a legislative process rather than enstated by the judicial system they hate so much.

SCREW YOU!!

I think we should use this to our advantage. It shows that the voting reform movement is truly bipartisan. Tell all your Republican friends!

Seriously, there's a movement afoot to enlist moderate Republicans and urge them to egg their local GOP committees and clubs into endorsing resolutions calling for true electoral reforms (verifiable paper trails or paper ballots, no partisan-owned machines, etc).
These pics just add fuel to that fire. Let's fan the flames!

49. I agree, We can use this movement for our purpose.
We need to be including moderate Republicans with this cause, it affects them as well. These people feel they have been cheated, so do we. We can join together on common ground. HAVE OUR VOTE COUNT.

We get so angry when a Freep says, "get over it" Yet do the same thing when the shoe is on the other foot. We could instead reach across and show them a better way. We need them as well, Show those in Congress this is the will of the People. Both parties. Americans.

I wrote email to Rep. Mike Selle (D) regarding touch screen machine without paper trail and possibility fraud invole. He wrote me back today and this is what he said...

"I have the same concerns with touch screen voting, and discussed them
this morning with Snohomish County Auditor, Bob Terwilliger. What may be
part of the solution is to move to all mail voting as they have done in
the State of Oregon with scan read ballots on paper that go out to
everyone."

64. Rossi is also running commercials
I heard it on the radio when I was driving home about how the dead voted, soldiers voted weren't counted and how King County stole the election for Rossi and calling for a re-vote.Dan Evans and the former sec of state Monroe(I think) both supported a revote! I sure hope it back fires here. What is funny is they assume Rossi would win on a second vote and I don't think that is true-especially now that he is such a sore loser and claimed the title gov-elect before the votes were finished being counted.

66. The soldiers not voting story is a pantload....
So far, one soldier has come forward to say he got his ballot in Iraq, one day after the general election, so he threw it away. HAd he cast his vote, even a day late, it would have counted, by Washington law.

There are special provisions in sate and federal law for overseas service-members: They don't have to register (!); their votes are given maximum latitude with respect to deadlines; and even if they don't get an official ballot, they can still vote a special Federal Ballot, and write in their selection for state and local offices in their home precincts. This is regardless of whether the County sent their ballots on time or not.

The GOP here right now is raising a huge stink over the fact that King County did not use their bulk mailing permit until six days after they said they sent overseas ballots--a smoking gun in the GOP eyes.

But the dumbasses haven't even checked out the process. Overseas ballots are sent in specially franked envelopes paid for by the federal government--no bulk-mailing permit is required!!!

But they'll go on shouting like lunatics--on the airwaves--and then claim that since so many people favor a revote, it ought to be done. Give DEMS as many hours to advertise, and as much fawning press coverage, and I guarantee the "will of the people" for a revote will evaporate.

Finally, while they make a lot of noise about felons voting, I'm not to worried. I bet most felons vote against an Attorney General and for the GOP--its a professional courtesy.

82. Felons CAN VOTE LEGALLY in WA!
They have to ask for reinstatement. Only 11 states permanently bar felons from voting. My letter on the subject (unpublished so far).

The Revote people in Olympia had signs bemoaning the fact that ex-felons voted in the last election, but apparently did not bother to educate themselves about Washington voter laws, which stipulate that felons can have their right to vote reinstated. Only 11 states permanently bar ex-felons from voting, most of which (by sheerest coincidence, I’m sure) are former slave-holding states.

Being an ex-felon, besides being a permanent bar to voting in some states, is also a bar to working for companies that make gaming equipment. But not only does it not disqualify you from working for companies that make voting machines, it can actually rate a gold star on your resume. A Diebold subsidiary employed 5 convicted felons as senior managers and developers. These people helped write the central compiler computer code that counted 50% of the votes in 30 states. Jeff Dean, senior programmer on Diebold's central compiler code, was convicted of 23 counts of felony theft in the first degree, and he served jail time for planting back doors in his client's accounting software and using a "high degree of sophistication" to evade detection over a period of 2 years. You remember Diebold—that’s the company whose CEO promised to deliver Ohio’s votes to Bush.

If you want to worry about felons, worry about the ones who write the software that counts your vote and who won’t even let you look at it. Manufacturers of slot machines are required to have their software on file with gaming commissions—what have the writers of software for voting machines got to hide?

88. New project for Tim Eye-Man (with Rossi's blessing)
That SOB is probably going to waste taxpayer money for an initiative to permanently bar felons and ex felons from voting.

And if he even tries to do that, we need to get his ass in jail so he can't be involved in politics...

83. The Republicans opposed a re-vote in fraud-plagued Ohio,
but the are calling for another one in Washington, where the votes have already been counted three times. It all depends on allegiances, and, IMHO, is pure hypocrisy.:grr:

86. I heard her speech (at the Swearing In) on CSPAN yesterday...
I was impressed. She's compassionate, yet tough...when she needs to be. She has very detailed plans as Gov. And hearing her speak, I thought...NO WAY is this tough lady EVER going to step aside for Rossi...no matter what!

87. I want to know
If she has plan for the single mothers who were removed from governmental support by the previous governor, all the while he spent tons of money building a useless conference center in desolated downtown Olympia.

This is how our previous governor Gary Locke dealt with the problem; when the protestor showed up wearing case number & and said, "People are not numbers," he decided to take a day off, and went into hiding. Each protestor had to write a note and asked the clerk to give the notes to the governor

So, our new governor, would she tough enough to show up to her work in a situation like that, and say, "Yes I took those mothers off welfare, and sent some of the mom and their kids to live on street. That was my decision," or would she just take a day off like Locke and hide and coward?

I am sure CSPAN won't tell you about such a thing. Now that she's in power, I wonder what she is going to do about those mothers. The last time I checked, moms living under poverty line don't have lobbyist in fancy dress having a ball, celebrating the victory of Christine Gregoire with Champaign. I am not about to forget those moms after getting to know some of them in person.

89. Welcome to DU, Cori Cycle!!!
We're glad to have you with us!:toast:

Your concerns are very real and we share them. I took part in "actions" supporting the re-count in Washington, though I live in New York. What affects you affects us all. What you need to do is to support your causes and make every effort to bring them to the attention of your new governor and to have your friends, including those of us on DU, to support them, as well. There are a lot of us in your corner. We can get the job done if we can just get the attention of the right people.
