Protesters Get Prime Spot for Inauguration
Protesters Get Prime Spot for Inauguration
Yahoo! News ^ | SAM HANANEL, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The National Park Service has agreed to give thousands of anti-war demonstrators a prime spot along President Bush (news - web sites)'s inaugural parade route that will allow them to protest during the procession.

The anti-war group A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition is planning to erect its own bleachers in the space, an open plaza on Pennsylvania Ave., just a few blocks from the Capitol building, said Brian Becker, national coordinator for the group. The bleachers could seat up to 1,000 people and the park service estimates up to 10,000 could fill the space standing shoulder to shoulder.

"I don't think it's ever happened in history that the anti-war movement has ever been able to have this kind of setup," Becker said.

Park service spokesman Bill Line said the agency has offered the space in John Marshall Plaza to the group but is still waiting for them to submit written confirmation. Becker said A.N.S.W.E.R. plans to submit the paperwork as soon as they can work out details about where to set up the bleachers.

The presidential motorcade carrying Bush will pass directly in front of the protesters' bleachers, which will be across the street from other bleachers set up by the official inaugural committee. The plaza, between the federal courthouse and the Canadian embassy, runs about 240 feet along the historic street that stretches from the Capitol to the White House.

The appearance is better and easier ignored by the media than many protest signs along the complete route.

64. You got it.
The number of protestors will look smaller, and will at any rate have to be smaller, the appearance of order and fairness, and the illusion of free speech in America, will be maintained. And the protestors various causes will all be tainted when lumped under the A.N.S.W.E.R umbrella.

And MSM will know where precisely where NOT to point their cameras.

15. I have to agree --
I've seen cops riot -- and beat the hell out of unarmed peaceful protesters. It could have been because the cops were spoiling for a fight and were frustrated because the protesters were determined to be peaceful.

And then I am of the Kent State college generation -- the shock of that day will stay with me -- just as the day that JFK was assassinated.

The best plan would be to avoid D.C. -- go somewhere else. The crowd numbers will be inflated and the bastards will brad the millions came out to see Der Bushie.

If the protesters don't show up -- the crowds will be smaller.

Then the cops will have to beat the crap out of the right wing nut cases.

21. Yes -- I've been to Japan
and they are helpful.

The US cops are more like the EAST German gestapo. Some US cops might be decent -- unfortunately the ones I've seen are just macho bullies. Cops were especially hateful to students during the Vietnam era -- as if all college students were the enemy.

65. Yah
because in japan, cop's lives aren't threaten by anyone. therefore their first priority is to being helpful and be at service for others. The first thing happen if they ever pulls gun on anyone is immediate automatic suspension of the officer and investigation.

Anyhow, do you ever wonder why if you were a police officer in japan, people would respect you and treat you like an important person? The same goes for teachers. It’s a different kind of world with different kind of people in it. I am sure they don't mean to be this way but I found american police officer to be unnecessary confrontational and on some kind of power trip.

107. Not All US Cops Are Rotten
On a trip to NYC in 1996 I asked a cop to point me in the right direction, and he did (I got off the subway in lower Manhatten where the streets are all higgedly piggedly and was trying to get to Battery Park)

I live in Orlando, my Mom used to work downtown and sometimes I'd meet her for lunch. I'd sometimes stop to talk with some of the police officers and pet their horses. They were very nice.

Just before the 2004 March For Women in DC), at a Planned Parenthood festival in Dupont Circle. I offered a few of the Cops there some of the free Luna bars we were giving out, and they *politely* refused.

But then, I read about police brutality. I think the bad stuff makes the news and is remembered, and we tend to forget the other stuff.

19. I understand why you say that
but this time I think it might be different. DC is not getting reimbursed for how many millions of dollars? Overtime for the police, extra security, DC voted 9 to 1 in favor of Kerry. It is a chunk of money DC has to lay out for this and I suspect they won't get much in return. I hope they stick to the plan cuz it sure would be sweet to see.

If they didn't zone an area for protestors, they'd be unable to edit us out. So fine, I'll get in anyway:

Turn Your Back on Bush

I've sent a few emails, etc. and they don't respond, so I have no idea what the "signal" will be. I guess you can't give it out too early, or the government will disrupt it? But screw it, I love the idea and so would Gandhi. I'll just figure it out on my own when to turn. I'm showing up early shirley with a paperback book and doggie bag of snacks to stake out a spot, and I figure when it's time to turn my back to that criminal motherfucker, I'll know it.

By giving them special access, I'm sure they have to give something away. My guess is that they won't get to have anything on hand, even posters. All they will get to do is yell and look like a bunch of people out of control with now messages that the rest of us can read.

Everybody who goes - be careful of stumbling. Sudden moves are forbidden like looking directly at the FÜHRER and looking to either side.

tricking the protest organizers into thinking that they will have a space, but on inauguration day something will "come up" to justify keeping them out. Or they will be informed the night before that they cannot protest there, blah, blah.

If I could I'd go. I'd like to see about a million people show up and tell them to shove the free speech zones up their asses. The whole country is a free speech zone. And that fascist chimp doesn't own the White House either; its ours.

35. I laughed when I read this headline because I knew immediately why it
happened. Then I read the responses in the thread and found two astute in-the-beltway thinkers. Yep, Bush* left DC holding the bag for millions of dollars of security. I read the article in yesterday's Washington Post and couldn't believe it. And Williams is angry. The money the City received from Homeland Security is earmarked to guard against terrorism. One Republican even remarked nothing like this had ever happened in the history of inaugurations, the City of Washington, DC having to shoulder most of the cost (I think it's something like 52 million dollars) for the security of a presidential (sic) inauguration. The White House remarked the City could take the cost out of its Homeland Security funds ... can you believe it?

I guess Williams by signaling call ANSWER is giving Bush* a response: it's payback time, buddy. I know you hate protesters. Here's a thousand in your face.

It's times likes these you have you love DC: the political capital of the royal payback.

* would NEVER allow protestors near the inauguration. They didn't last time, and they've since consolidated their power.

Donning tinfoil, I can only assume that the protestors will be put at a safe distance (West virginia), or that violence will be instigated as an excuse for more crackdowns on dissent.

This CAN'T be even the pyrrhic victory it sounds like.

69. I seem to remember a similar set-up
during the first * inaugural. There were bleachers set up for a small number of protesters on the parade route and the rest of us where squeezed into what little space was available along the parade route. It was real tight, but I was standing where I could see the limo. There were tight little pockets of protesters, all separated from each other, but on the parade route.

Amy Goodman said the good {coff} folks over at Free Republic have their knickers in a twist because they won't be allowed to bring their little US flags on sticks to wave. Security says no to the sticks. Mwa ha ha!

Important to note aside from the humor factor: nothing that could be construed as a weapon is allowed and will be taken from you. That goes for umbrellas too. DUers who are going, remember your rain ponchos!

76. 'No umbrellas' also bans the CIA's umbrella weaponry.
The CIA invented an umbrella that could fire a tiny dart with various chemicals, paralyzers or killers.

It was admitted at the Church Committee hearings in the 70's and there is even one in a museum.

Some 'kooks' think the photo showing a man with an umbrella 20 feet away from JKF in Dallas on a clear sunny day had something to do with his assassination.

Realize that the Emperor must also be protected from the 'royal guard.'

This would be way, way too handy to have all these protesters in a single spot and insert their own people to start trouble in order to lay the blame at the protesters' feet. Nope. Wouldn't be anywhere near those bleachers. A better plan is to hook up people who know each other in groups of 5-10 to line the entire parade route. Everyone either turns their back, shows their bum (depending on if you plan to get arrested or not) or unveil t-shirts under their other clothing at the appropriate moment. The MSM can't ignore the entire route, either.

70. On Morning Edition just now i heard some Bush official (?) say-
"The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition is allied with terrorists, they are allies of Saddam Hussein"...

Tho this isn't the actual quote and i didn't write down who said it, and what his position was (the article will be published on NPR.ORG after 10 a.m. Eastern), my jaw dropped in amazement at this totally irresponsible statement- especially when it was followed with a very quick disclaimer "ANSWER says they are not affiliated with terrorists" but from the writer of the piece and not someone from ANSWER itself to call this bastard on his accusation.

Will someone get the actual quotes so we can flood NPR with email regarding this article?
We must let them know that we aren't gonna let these people get away with lies and propaganda.

I can just imagine someone, somewhere along the chain of paperwork for this to happen, said, "Give them what they want, then take it away." It won't be surprising to see riot police show up and beat the crowd senseless while all they do is stand with their backs turned. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

95. This is for biometric data gathering...
That, my friends, is the point.

Smile, you're on Candid Camera!!!

Damn near everything the bushies do is in anticipation of the day they allow the next massive terra-attack, which WILL be biological. Genotype-specific, just as the sick f***s at the PNAC talked about in 'Rebuilding America's Defenses'. A 'useful political tool', they called it...

This is why there's been such a push to collect people's DNA for all sorts of reasons (often accomplished via ballot measures, such as the one that Californian's just *moronically* passed in November '04 that allows them to collect yours if you are just *ARRESTED* for a serious crime). They are looking for common threads amongst the types of people they don't like: Liberals, drug addicts, gays, etc.

Once they finish developing the disease that will wipe out large numbers of us miscreants whilst leaving rich, white, christian-types immune, they will unleash it under the guise of a terra-ist attack, and as long as they don't make it *too* obvious what they've done, they'll get away with all the provisions of the MEHPA that were rolled into the Patriot Act (I and II) and the 'intel reform bill'.

Basically, those powers amount to an extreme form of martial law that even allows the authorities to confiscate everything owned by, then arresting, anyone who won't submit to whatever quarantine and 'treatment' the fascists wish to administer. The 'sickies' will all be rounded up into large Gitmo-like facilities, (many of which are already being built for this purpose by Halliburton), or just the nearest sports stadium or arena, where they will either just die or 'rise up', then get slaughtered.

Taking pics and identifying the anti-bush types in this country is all part of the same master eugenics plan that the world's power-elite have had in the works since the 1930's. ALthough partly ideological in nature, the real point is to prepare for the eventual mass-human-die-out that will be occuring in the next 10 years as the worlds oil and other resources become depleted to the point that the authorities will no longer be able to control the antics of the freezing, starving world population.

By pre-emptively thinning the herd, the world power-elite think they'll be able to successfully maintain and even consolidate their power and privilege for maybe one more generation. The laws being passed to repeal the Constitution, such as the USA Patriot act, are always carefully wordsmithed in order to keep the freepers from freaking out right along with us DUer's. They are fooled into believeing the rules about 'no lawyer, no charges, no day in court, citizenship revoked' will only ever be applied to what THEY consider terra-ists: smarmy brown-skin types making dirty b*mbs in their basement. But if that were the case, why not EXPLICITALLY state that the act CANNOT be used against citizens? THe short answer: that would nullify the real point of having them in place.

Total power. That is what these sick f***s are all about. Creating a one-party state, giving them effective license to control all the media, destroy all the dissenters, pack the courts and the congress and the state governments with their adherents (til they abolish everything but the Executive Federal Branch). It's all laid out in a master plan down in the vaults at the AEI, mark my words.

Tin-foil theory? Sure. But I've had this theory for a long time now, and I watch for the signs and steps. I hate to say it, but over and over I see the steps necessary for the scenario being taken, incrementally, but inexorably.

These people from the bush admin are the embodiment of the exact same evil force that arose in 30's Germany. This demon cannot be destroyed, because it is the manifestation of a natural law, at least as far as the human animal is concerned, because this demon arises directly from something called 'human nature'...

In 2001, the 50 thousand+ of us were spread all along with the route along with the far fewer Bush supporters. His darkened limo rushed along 90% of the route from the Capitol to the White House. (You didn't see that on CNN or Faux)

Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 07:53 AM by NicRic
I believe the protesters need to hire their own security to check the bleachers both B/4 and during the ugly affair. Some right wing wacko out there just might see this as a oppertunity to get rid of alot of "libs" in one place ! Also the security should have thier own cameras and take pictures of anyone aiming thier cameras at the protesters , in other words you want to document us ,we are also documenting you ,so if something should happen , we would have pictures of those posssibly involved in any diasaster ,that should just hapen to happen at that one piticular area of bleachers ! If Iam being overly concerned for my fellow anti bush protesters ,tell me why and I will be the frist to admit Iam to pariniod(spell check)

Yup. Then at the crucial moment, Rove, who will be sitting in the back of the limo between W and the crowd, will distract W by pointing at the GOP crowd across the street and saying:

"Look George, look. Look at the people. See them wave. See them smile. They are happy. They like George. Happy, happy people!"

Thereby keeping the boy king blind to the random obscene gestures and hairy bare asses he would otherwise encounter scattered along both sides of the route. From there W will toddle merrily along home, secure in the staged illusion that no one REALLY dislikes him, or they would have been there to show it.
