WORLD SOCIAL FORUM:
In the U.S., Polls and Bullets Blot Out Upcoming Summit

Katherine Stapp

NEW YORK, Jan 12 (IPS) - Activists from the United States are heading to Brazil for the upcoming World Social Forum, determined to refute the widespread belief that their country has "gone Republican". They’re also in search of fresh inspiration for the fight against the exploitation of people, and natural resources.

"With the re-election of George Bush, a lot of people around the world washed their hands of the United States," says Timi Gerson, the field director for Global Trade Watch – a division of the Washington-based group, Public Citizen.

The U.S. president’s second term in office has been greeted with dismay by many. Bush’s critics disagree with several policies adopted by Washington, from the decision to wage war on Iraq, to the U.S. failure to endorse the Kyoto Protocol – an agreement for cutting down on global warming.

Good for them! At least someone is reaching out to the world in a conscientious social way!

1. This is good
I hope that we can prove to the rest of the world that we are not just the next NAZI Germany. I hope that this also gets us connected with people around the world who can change this.

2. Hey, I don't blame them......
I've almost washed my hands of the USofA too!

Seriously, anyone from other countries who reads DU frequently should accept our sincere apologies for the stupid half of the country. Please DO NOT think that we are all like them. DU represents the other half of the country - you know - the one that's a true representative of what the founding fathers envisioned for America.
