Schwarzenegger Woos'Oprah' Viewers
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gov. Gray Davis brought out the big names as they headed into the final three weeks of the gubernatorial recall campaign, with the actor turning to Oprah Winfrey and the governor enlisting the help of former President Clinton.

Schwarzenegger and his wife, television journalist Maria Shriver, flew to Chicago and appeared on Monday's season premiere of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Polls show the Republican is struggling to win over women, the talk show's primary audience.

"I am my own woman," Shriver said. "I accept him with all his strengths and all his weaknesses, as he does me. The last time I checked my vows, that's what marriage is supposed to be about."

2. I don't believe she has to by law
I read last week that she falls under the same exemption as the Stern show. I think it had to do with a percentage of news content. Not sure of the exact FCC rule.

4. I thought he was running in California?
Why national tv? Actually, I think having Maria with him is an attempt to stop the anti-woman impression he's giving. I can't imagine it'll work. But then again, many of these Oprah watchers believe anything they're told. So many of the women I know get their opinions from television. Sad.

Thank goodness he can't run for President.

14. It will work. The women of the world always stand behind Oprah
Oh, Oprah will ask a few hard questions but they will be framed to allow Arnold and Maria to make Arnold repentant and redeemable, and no doubt Man of the Century in the minds of millions of women.

Oprah says jump and millions of women across the country jump in unison.

Curse oprah. She has proven that when it comes down to it, all people, despite their obstacles and challenges just want to be "part of the in crowd" and, in this case, Oprah can consider herself a card-carrying member of the radical right. Kudos to her.

Send her an email -- www.oprah.com

38. Boy, that was a gross generalization, let me try...
Millions of white males in the United States support the fascists and vote "Republican" all the time and they jump to the military tune in unison.

How's that?

I'm a woman and I've never watched Oprah nor have I ever appreciated people who generalize on the basis of gender or race.

10. Are we so afraid of Ah-nold that we don't want to give him any air time?
I have faith in Oprah's audience. They are not mindless idiots. Let Ah-nold make his best case and then people can make up their own minds. Most of Oprah's audience doesn't live in California anyway. Oprah has done many good things for our cause. Just because she was pressured into hoisting Ah-nold doesn't mean she has sold us out. Believe me when the Producer says jump even Oprah ask how high. Give her a break. Ah-nold is his own worst enemy anyway.

Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 11:33 AM by tjdee
I find that statement a bit funny, myself. Oprah's production studio, Harpo, produces the show. She is the big gun.

The bottom line is that Maria Shriver is close personal friends with Oprah Winfrey for what, 20 years or something. Oprah did a reading at the wedding. That's what this is about. Nothing more, nothing less.

While I don't like it, Arnie's big news and most of her viewers don't live in California. The hyperventilating over this one show is kind of ridiculous.

13. Why should we GIVE him airtime and not others?
and if he is GIVEN that airtime because he is a celebrity why should he get to campaign?
While I agree the airtime isn't necessarily helping him that for me is reason to give Davis EQUAL airtime as it probably WOULD help him.

16. What is OPRAH afraid of--bad ratings?
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 11:46 AM by rocknation
Whether she's doing this out of "pressure" or friendship, it's wrong of her not to give the other candidates the same opportunity. Who cares if it's legal or not--it's simply the right thing to do. It won't kill Oprah, her ratings or her audience to hear what Davis, Bustamante, and McClintock also have to say.

20. Is she a good friend of Laura Bush's too?
Did anyone see the Oprah Show when "w" was running in 2000?
It was such an incredible puff piece - he even brought his own slick video which they played showing he and Laura dreamily walking hand in hand around the ranch and relating all those adorable stories about the twins when they were babies and he used to get up first and bring Laura her coffee in bed and would wash up each infant and give her one and then he had one so they each had something to hold - ugh! I can't go on but you get the idea - it was an hour long ad - totally soft focused just for "gals." As I said before.....ugh!

29. Part of what I sent last week
CodePink has been all over steroid boy & sent out an alert last week.

"Maria Shriver might be Oprah's friend but her husband is a P-I-G! and for Oprah to give campaign time to this 'speak to no-issue' misogynistic vacant head space is an insult to women and Californians. But then Oprah doesn't live here! The problems here are complex and we DO NOT need, yet another non-Californian, giving this rethuglican mouthpiece FREE air time & tacit endorsement. At one time, I was a viewer & supporter. Oprah began losing me with her endorsement and apologist activity for the invasion of Iraq. She loses me completely with this stunt. I won't stick around to be insulted again in the future...

No, I will not vote for ANYONE who has so little regard for women. I guess having 3 daughters hasn't made an impact on his steroid damaged brain! Shame on Oprah to allow herself to be used! When, before October 7, 2003, are Gray & Sharon Davis scheduled to appear on Oprah? FYI - Davis IS the current ELECTED governor of California."

34. Ha..family man, I know not
I have Wolfie in the background as I try to do my work. Telling quote, remember they are trying to sell their marriage and unity, Maria, the enabler, says: 'Remember, my daughters are watching this!" I have arguments with my husband about child rearing but I would never say the comment that they are MY Daughters. Only if he is not involved in child rearing and is a distant Dad would someone say this. This is not a marriage where both parents act as parents. I know many women would say this, but they do not have fathers who are involved with their kids.

40. Did anyone catch this??? "'a pump is better than coming,'"
"'a pump is better than coming,'" He actually said this...

This is a quote from Arnold today on the Oprah show:

.................................................
"The idea was to say things that were so over the top" to promote his early movies and body building in general, Schwarzenegger said of remarks he made in the 1970s.

"I don't remember the Oui magazine interview or any of the others," he said.

"But did you remember the parties, Arnold?" Winfrey asked.

"I really don't," he replied. "These were the times when I was saying things like 'a pump is better than coming,' he said, prompting his wife, dressed in a long black dress with a silver cross around her neck, to put her hand across his face.
.................................................
http://wireservice.wired.com/wired/story.asp?section=Breaking&storyId=782076

I am simply floored by this. They misspelled the word for the article even. He said cuming, they spelled it coming...omg Am I missing something here?

This is the man the GOP wants as the next Governor of the 5th largest economy in the world.
