Fear Of Rising Water Prompts Evacuations ..... Possible Leak In Dam
LOS ANGELES -- Authorities worried about rainwater built up behind a Riverside County dam were evacuating about 840 homes as a precaution early Friday.

A police spokesman said he believed there was a small leak in the Prado Dam, but a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates and oversees the dam, said there was no leak.

"We're releasing water," said Fred-Otto Egeler, spokesman for the Los Angeles district of the Corps of Engineers. "It's being retained behind the dam and we're making normal releases at this moment."

Asked why the evacuations were being ordered, Egeler said that decision was made by the Fire Department

1. I thought the bible said
Fire next time.

I hope everybody is able to get out/away in time. I would NOT trust the government telling me everything is going to be OK.

2. Yes and they were warned there were structural cracks in Big Bear lake
AND Prado Damn before that community was ever built....there are loads of homes in the area built right under a damn with structural cracks. How the developers ever got permission to build an entire community right under it is beyond me.

3. because they're developers; they can do whatever they want because growth
is progress, even if it's cancerlike. State park? We must have a half-empty mall! Hiking trails? We must have McMansions! Or do you want to be *sob* anti-people?

6. Water and real estate are the BIG California "interests."
As it was in the mid-20th century, so it still is, afaik.

4. Which was the one that gave way back in the 60s?
They caught it all giving way from above in a helicopter. I saw it on "Wrath of God," some show on PBS. Scary, really.

My cousin in LA just about had water coming in her back door the other night. She wants to go visit her mother to get some genealogical picture negatives for me, but the road is impassable. I must wait. {{{sigh}}}

7. That dam breaking footage was
absolutely terrifying. This huge wall of water just pouring out of the thing.

They interviewed this one girl who tried to get her mother to leave, and her mother wouldn't, so she took off in her VW bug with her cat. Scary place to be!

11. No problem. They're using faith-based engineering now.
Everybody pray extra-hard tonight.
