Dreier bill targets hiring of illegals
Proposed Social Security card called fraud-proof
By JASON NEWELL
STAFF WRITER

(snip)

The Glendora Republican, who wants to boost penalties for illegal hiring and add fraud-proof safeguards to Social Security cards - which are required to get a job - said the proposal comes at an opportune time, with Social Security reform about to take center-stage in the Congress.

(snip)

Dreier, who introduced the Illegal Immigration Enforcement and Social Security Protection Act of 2005 this past week, already has tried to win support for the plan in discussions with White House and Mexican officials. The bill has bipartisan support in the House of Representatives, he said, and next week Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, will introduce a version of the bill in the Senate.

Under the plan, any person seeking a new job would be required to obtain an updated "counterfeit-proof" Social Security card, equipped with a digitized photo and an electronic identification strip containing the person's legal status. To offset fears of government intrusion, the card would be clearly marked, "This is not a national ID card," Dreier said.

(snip)

Known as the Bonner Plan - after T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council - the bill would also add 10,000 new Homeland Security agents whose only job would be to make sure employers are following the law.

3. The split personalities of California conservatives
On the one hand they hate immigrants - legal and illegals - even though they take care of their houses, lawns and children

On the other hand they hate "big" government; Reagan's "take government off our back"

Thus the twisting - dare I say pretzling? - of sentences and ideas

8. why it's not a national ID card
because only if you're applying for a new job do you need one.

No kids, no adults in permanent positions, no retirees and no self-employed are required to get one.

That said, yes in 40 years or whatever it will become a national ID
card...

but what do you think your social security number is already?

Dreier is a royal asshole, pumping out multinational propaganda
like a puppet. It's actually surprising he would get into this
issue for multinationals want "unlimited worker VISAS" in the US
(see GATS 4 in free trade agreeements).

But, illegal immigration is a very real problem in the US. It has
nothing to do with racism or any such evil, it's called depression of wages for US citizens and stress of social services that were designed for members of this country.

There are more than one report of terrorists using illegal immigrant
smugglers, gangs and routes to enter the US through Mexico

and the cost to the US in terms of illegally obtained social services,
nonpaying taxes and depression overall of wages says something has to
be done.

Bush already gave social security benefits to illegal aliens through an internationalization treaty with Mexico.

Check that out...he claims not enough benefits for Americans...yet
has no problem giving illegals social security.

Are you aware that illegals get Medicaid, no questions asked?

How many people are without health insurance and no resource to
health care who are US citizens (are in the US legally)?

10. This is the problem of unfunded mandate
and the problem of the budgetary crisis of CA:

First, about 40% of the budget is mandated by the ballot measures - people want dedicated funds to go to their favorite causes, but not taxed to pay for them

And then the high number of illegal immigrants who, by (federal) law cannot be denied medicare but with no (federal) funds to support them

9. Well, his Nazi homeboys ain't gwine like that...
I want the House in '06, and my scruples are a tad malleable along the road to that dream. If he wants to stand up and endanger all of his rapacious Inland Empire pals and their parasitic use of ultra-cheap labor, he might just make himself more vulnerable. Fine by me.

Drier is a shrewd and effective toady to privilege. Unlike many other functionaries in Congress, he's actually dangerous. Toppling him would be a fine thing, and if he wants to tamper with the ugly little secret of how his local economy thrives, he's ripe for the picking.

15. Dreier is a true moran
If the employers don't care that their workers are illegal, then it doesn't matter anyway. I know of an establishment were the owner is fully aware that his employees are illegal, and that they are presenting phony Social Security cards...all he asks is that they let him know if it's real or fake. And Dreier wants to hire 10,000 new Homeland Security agents just to follow up on employers when we can't even keep the borders secure enough to prevent some 3 million illegals crossing over each year? Not that it will do much good, but I will be calling this eijit's office as, unfortunately, he is my representative.

right wing to pit segments of our people against each other.

We can handle the immigration problem AND honor labor. (And we're a mixed family of labor and degreed folks. Elite? Lol, no.)

And Dreier himself probably employees a bevy of illegal immigrants to push his lawn mower and clean his house and to walk his dog. This is his bid to satisfy the racism of his constituency. Smart boy.

24. Megawatt, I understand the thinking behind restricting labor.
Used to belong to the CCWA while I was going through school. And there are two problems with our border policies.

One, those people have been going back and forth since before this country existed. I don't see how anyone is going to stop them.

Two, both parties benefit from leaving the status quo.

Lastly, Southern CA is one of the enclaves of American raciscm. So, I don't think enforcing reasonable border policies is racist but I know that Dreier's constituents are. They used to be my neighbors and the only brown faces I ever saw besides my own were behind a stroller or a lawn mower.

23. College educated - but recognize the problem that 'cheap'
labor does to the market. Combine illegal hiring and submarket pay, with the effects of 20 years of moving manufacturing out of the country... and we are heading for a world of hurt. Our economy simply can not survive without a healthy working and middle class. It is a shame that many people have not paid attention to this trend which is now escalating shrinking the middle class (going up the economic scale) due to the outsourcing of white collar jobs. But later late to the party than never at the party. With the outsourcing issue as well - focus should be on tax policy and other incentives used for those who keep jobs here and against those who are headquartered here but move more and more jobs out.

I am mixed on immigration policy, BUT have always believed that the problem is always framed by the right as a scare tactic that lays blame on the immigrants which does heighten racism (the push for prop 187 and its awful advertising was the perfect example) - but that they really just want a political "issue" without dealing with the real problem. The desire of employers to have a steady flow of cheap labor for whom they have to provide NO labor protections.

Back in the mideightes I was working with rural youth in Illinois, the racist spew against "wetbacks" taking jobs was palpable. Planting the idea that perhaps the problem was the employers wanting to pay so much less - was a novel one to them, they had never thought of it...

I may be alone on this, but this bill is one that deals directly with the problem - the employers. If some kind of immigration reform is heading down the pike - I do hope that it focuses on the employers (which also tends to move the issue of race-fear mongering that often gets played up in the campaigns to push for such movements). Frankly I am surprised to see from whom this proposal comes.

20. Yeah, that really offset my fears!
And I believe everything that Scotty McClellan says too.

/sarcasm

Lets see how can this be used to the advantage of Republicans?

Um well, just like IRS audits it depends on whom you check out doesn't it?

Businesses contributing to Democrats could find themselves talking to the INS while blatant Republican law breakers will never get so much as a call.

Much like Free Republic can offer tax free donations and um other places can't and the IRS had been auditing organizations whose members tend to support Democrats.

22. I think this bill will be used to pass Bush's "guest worker" plan.
Drier would not be pursuing this without White House approval. Drier's bill probably will include Bush's guest-worker plan before it comes to the floor.
