A large avalanche has been reported in the Dutch Draw area near the Canyons Ski Resort.

The avalanche occurred just before 2 p.m. Friday.

Early reports indicate two slides occurred near the ski area, one described to be 300 feet wide.

2News helicopter pilot, Tony Fizer estimates the length of one slide to be approximately 1,500 feet down the hill.

“The only thing that stopped it was a cluster of trees,” Fizer said.

One person is believed to be trapped in the slide and up to at least 15 others were feared near the area.

2. Damn it
I lost a friend in an avalanche in 2003. It sucks. The descriptions of how quickly they can get trapped are scary.

A very large avalanche slides down the northeast chute of Elk Point on Mt. Timpanogos, near Provo, Utah, Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005. The natural release had a fracture line length of over a half-mile and 4 to 8 feet deep, descending three different, major avalanche paths at once. The slide mowed down hundreds of mature pines over an area of two football fields and piled up snow 40 feet deep. (AP Photo/Bruce Tremper)

9. That picture is dated Wednesday the 12th
Was that a different avalanche, or are we just now learning of this for some reason?

13. The boundaries are there for a reason.
If you ski beyond them you assume a greater risk. Everyone knows this. I hope people don't act shocked. Not to sound insensitive, but the only reasons to be skiing beyond the boundaries are 1) You're a professional 2) You're making a ski video for OLN or 3) You're unqualified and don't know what the hell you're doing.

18. I don't really think 1 and 2 are very good reasons
my friend was with a professional; they were both killed. He had two small children who are now fatherless. The wife apparently had a nervous breakdown. I simply don't understand the self indulgence of that behavior.

19. Maybe Scarbororugh will feature this as an example of God's revenge
on the sinful.

Oh sorry, the radical right only bash non-Christians.

Forget those hurricanes in FL, too.
