FCC Chair Orders Investigation Into Williams' Deal With Bush Administration

WASHINGTON (AP) - The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission ordered an investigation Friday into whether conservative commentator Armstrong Williams broke the law by failing to disclose he was paid by the Bush administration to plug the president's education agenda.

The investigation relates to provisions that require disclosure of such arrangements, FCC Chairman Michael Powell said in a brief statement.

Also Friday, two Democratic senators asked the Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, to review whether any other federal agencies have paid commentators to support the administration's agenda.

Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate whether the Education Department's payment to Williams violated a ban on propaganda - and, if so, to determine who should be held accountable.

4. Get all of the Operation Mockingbird rightwingnut payolaistas !
The military needs these distracting b.s.ers in order to keep their scams alive. How else will a pliant ignorant mass of voters be kept silent when they find out that around $2.3 trillion is unaccounted for in the DoD. And NO, I'm not making that number up.

5. Here you go, reporting that commie news network...
didn't you learn a thing from the forgeries at CBS II?

Sarcasm off

What you shoudl have learned is that the data was correct, but this was used to kill the story.

:-)

Oh and by the way, who misses a trillion or two?

(Imagine what you could do with that to ahem build schools, rebuild infrastructure, aka take care of the commons?)

9. Yes, Rove did it again as with Hatfield's criminal background when
Rove provided the Bush story to him (see the Amy Goodman interview:

"Hatfield had previously refused to reveal the source of his information about Bush’s alleged cocaine arrest. He now to decided to name him. He claimed it was none other than Karl Rove Bush’s closest political adviser."
http://www.apfn.net/messageboard/8-12-03/discussion.cgi.20.html

It looks like the forgeries provided by ... hmmm, did the story in all right. Maybe the reporting should continue, as the story isn't really 'dead'.

What really did happen during Bush's "Lost Year" ?

10. In the process of writing a sci fi game
so we are also play testing, one of our play testers is what I call republican lite. He will vote for anything with an R, but he is starting to feel the pain. Well we referred to pulling a Karl Rove to kill stories about an influencial leader... he never made the connection that we were talking of CBS II, even when I said... yep old technique, has been used since at least the early 21st century...

It was funny

12. Notice that Powell is limiting the investigation to Williams
Powell was asked to find out everyone who was involved in this propaganda scheme, but he limits it to Williams. Many many rules were broken here where it is evident the FCC system is broken.

20. excellent point
Armstrong is the equivalent of the "16 words" meme. It's called a "limited hangout" -- and it seems to work for Rove every stinking time.

and not just the prostitute.

It seems reasonable to believe that the bush administration used public funds for propaganda. But I'm sure nothing will stick to them. :grr:

17. Williams will be the fall guy...
...the scapegoat a la grunts in the case of Abu Gharib. The payola is undoubtedly (including by Williams' own admission) much more widespread but by hanging him out to dry, the admin can make it look like they did something without really exposing all of the dirt.

21. Even though not perfect, I am very much enjoying this moment
The FCC and Powell were going to let this just pass by and sink into the ether.

Many of us here at DU signed the petitions and sent in requests to the FCC for an investigation.

So Yay, yay, yay for us! Good job DUers!
