Anti-Bush Bracelets Say, 'Count Me Blue'
After spending 10 days in London with friends who were outspoken about their disdain for President Bush (news - web sites)'s policies, Berns Rothchild came home wishing she had a way to show the world she didn't vote for him.

"I sort of felt ashamed, and didn't really want to be associated with being an American," said Rothchild, who lives in New York City and voted for John Kerry (news - web sites).

Her mother had a suggestion: bracelets, inspired by the Lance Armstrong Foundation's popular "LIVESTRONG" bands, that would signal opposition to Bush.

Thousands of miles away, two women in Idaho had the same idea. So did a woman in Kansas. The result? At least three separate bracelet ventures targeting left-leaning citizens who want to wear their political affiliation on their wrists — and at least one competitor bearing the opposite message.

3. I ordered my blue bracelets in mid November
from a woman I worked with during the campaign. Like all of us, she was depressed and came up with the idea. Mine says "One of 57 Million Americans" They were $5.00, with about half of that amount going to my choice of the Texas State Democratic Committee or the DNC. My understanding is since then for tax purposes the profits can no longer go that way, so the profits are going to an organization to aid the troops.

I love mine and gave some as Christmas stocking stuffers or tied them to the ribbon wrapping the package. A few days after Christmas, my mailman rang my doorbell and with a huge smile, pulled back his sweater sleeve to show me he was wearing his while delivering the mail, granted tucked under the sleeve, but he said he did show it to all his co-workers and they wanted to know where they could get one.

So I would know who to completely avoid associating with and who to NEVER help when they find themselves in trouble.

8. Sorry, but I'm all done with Repub's
I have no more empathy or sympathy for any of them. I've already passed on the chance to help 2 out of a jam that I could have easily fixed- and I fully intend to continue.

As far as I'm concerned, they can suffer just like they condemn others to.

9. Sorry, I can't agree with that
There is more that binds us together than splits us apart. As strongly as I hold my political beliefs, I don't for a moment think that something made up of ideas is more important than something made of flesh and blood.

This is not a criticism of you (believe me, I've felt those same emotions that drive your exasperation), but I do not see how decreasing the world's karma supply solves problems. I definitely see how it makes problems.

The world has enough misery. I won't go out of my way to add to it, and I hope that others will see things the same way.

Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 11:47 PM by depakid
then you'd have let 'em lose their job (in one case) or let 'em sign a really bad contract (in the other).

I just won't do it for these types anymore- and I've gotten to the point where I'm well clumping all Republicans in the same boat.

They want unremittant "personal responsibility" for everyone else- welp, they can damn well have it- ADA or no ADA- lose their home in a bad business deal or no- I'm not crying any tears nor lifting one finger for them... or anyone like them, unless I don't absolutely have to.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm sorry- it's not about political beliefs so much as it is how they'd treat others or hardships they'd gladly impose on others.

35. You are so right.
All this woo-woo, Oprah new age crap is why people get stepped on while the other side steals your wallet and lives in the lap of luxury. If people think for one minute that they care about you, they're kidding themselves.

I, too, am not going out of my way for these Repug Bush supporters one iota. I won't shop at their stores or use any of my resources to assist them. It's time to get down and dirty like they do.

27. I understand where you are coming from,...
,...but, ya' know what, I've known some really wonderful people who are Republicans and some really awful people who are Democrats. There's good and bad in every walk of life.

I don't blame you for saying "no more" to those who have taken advantage of your generosity. I just hope you funnel your anger in a way that helps you and others.

I try to catch myself when I am falling into the same kind of cynicism that produces the ultra-right predators because,...I don't ever want to become that which I most oppose.

Anyway,...just trying to offer encouragement and support here.

6. The last paragraph
says that "they are targeting left-leaning citizens who want to wear their political affiliation on their wrists..."

I think it goes way beyond that. This is more for people to show they don't support this administration's policies and there are people from right, left and in between who are appalled at this administration.

I just PM'd you and said I'd look up the info tomorrow and then realized I had Kim's website bookmarked, so here's the link to the "One of 57 Million Americans" bracelets. Also, I was wrong on the price. I ordered several and only remembered the full check amount. They are $3.00 not $5.00. She also has the bumperstickers.

It's Kim Cole and her website is Democratic Unity http://www.demunity.com/

19. About those red bracelets
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 03:59 AM by merci_me
I saw a staunch Democrat at a meeting a few weeks ago wearing a red bracelet and I asked him what it was for and now I forgot what it was, but it was something left leaning. I remember turning to my husband and laughing that the meaning of that red bracelet would certainly put a cabash on the Rethugs if they got it into their heads to start marketing red bracelets.

Just remembered.....AIDS Awareness and Substance Abuse Support.

It doesn't seem that long ago that pro-ana's and E.D.s were wearing red bracelets as a secret sign...as if pointy little elbows weren't evidence enough. :-)

We survived the blue and gray and now we want a blue Danube waltz which could go from a dance floor reprise to a full blown shooting war?

Of course, everyone is certainly empowered to make their own choices and I respect yours.

As for me, I will wear a color I believe could symbolize the re-creation of a unity that will benefit all people.

I will wear "blue".

"Blue" for "the people" and against those who sponsor corporate tyranny!!!
