Man who served in Iraq found dead in upstate New York

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A 24-year-old man who had served in Iraq was found dead along the Oswego River in what police are calling a suspicious death.

A passer-by found the body of Joseph Godfrey Jr., who was medically discharged after serving a year in the Army, beneath some wooden steps leading from a parking lot down to the river, police said.


Godfrey's father, Joseph Godfrey, said his son went to a bar Thursday night.

"I can't believe this happened to him," Joseph Godfrey said. "He's so sweet. He wouldn't hurt a fly."

Police would not say if Godfrey's death is a homicide or an accident. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.
