Slaying may be Hate Crime, and may be related to online discussions
http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/38704.htm

"Hossam Armanious, 47, who along with his wife and two daughters was found stabbed to death in his Jersey City home early Friday, would regularly debate religion in a Middle Eastern chat room, one source said."

I find this very scary. I hope that no matter what stupid things I may say online, nobody ever get mad enough to want to kill me.

3. I stopped posting on a discussion board
when another poster there told me he wanted to hit me in the face with a brick. The moderator wouldn't even delete the post.

There are some scary people out there in cyberspace.

Believe it or not.

6. Nonviolence pledge
I've seen some pretty despicable, mean remarks on this board, but we have all taken the pledge for nonviolence, so don't worry. You are safe here -- at least from contributors. Who knows about lurkers, though. Use a pseudonym just to be even safer.

Geez... you don't know that. You can't imply that it's okay to share personal information here just because the posters here have 'taken a pledge for nonviolence'.

It's always safest to not give personal identifying information unless you are comfortable that you know the person, and then you are taking a chance. You definitely shouldn't broadcast it because of some site's 'non-violence' pledge.

12. What nonviolence pledge?
I dont recall ever taking it. I'm certainly not a non-violent person, there are certain situatiosn when violence is necessary.

That being said I'm not going to stalk some random person I meet online and kill them for what they say. Anyone who does such a thing deserves to be responded to in kind with violence.

15. I also never heard of a non-violence pledge.
Maybe I missed the fine print. In any case, a pledge is meaningless.

8. While it is important to be honest it is also important to consider one's
safety. I get really worried when I see posts asking what's your first name, what kind of car do you drive, what county are you in and so on. It would be great if we could all just get to know each other better i real life, it just isn't a grand idea to put a lot of private info out there on the web.

No, I am not just paranoid. We are all being watched. Many lurkers are here because they want to learn and have similar political leanings to what we have. Some are not so simpatico. There are angry people out there looking for something/someone to focus strong emotions on.

If you doubt what I say, just google your screen name once in awhile. You might be astonished at how your posts make impressions and get included in other message boards/blogs. They aren't all as well intentioned as we would hope.

Be honest, but be careful. We need for all of us to stay in this fight for the return of the American way, truth, justice and hope for the future.

9. Oh my gosh, havocmom..
I found that when we had a hurricane I responded to someone who asked where I was and that post came up when I googled my screen name. That is scary and a lesson I just learned. Thanks a bunch.

10. Thanks for the real-life illustration
Glad you got through hurricane season OK and hope you never pick up a stalker.

If someone wants info, think about it a bit. A complete stranger? Someone whom you feel you sorta know/trust? There is always the PM option if you wanna expand/swap info.

But there is no reason to wear a tee shirt with a target on it to a Klan rally, if you get my drift ;)

There is a lot of information mining going on on-line. Most is for commercial interests, but one needs to be aware that there are some rather unkind folks out there too. We tend to be a trusting lot here at DU, because we are, for the most part, a trustworthy lot. But we are not in a closed room and there are some unsavory eyes and some unbalanced minds watching us too.

Be safe out there. We need all of us!

11. The propaganda campaign against the internet continues with fear now.
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 04:25 PM by JohnOneillsMemory
Posting scary stories at DU logically fits the tactics that accomplishes the CIA/neo-con goal of chilling the internet, not an accusation against this post, just a heads-up to all of us for the following reasons:

The anonymous internet is a perfect medium for fear-mongering and disinformation, the CIA's favorite technique for steering public awareness away from their crimes and foiling their opponents, us.

Many stories to discredit the internet and steer folks away from sites like this one are showing up. Remember the one about the pregnant woman killed and her fetus stolen? Big emphasis on meeting her killer online AND the cops using 'cyber-forensics' to find the killer.

Even Air America Radio has an ad playing over and over for a citizens watch group to prevent internet crimes against children.
Message:
"The internet is a dangerous place. Don't let your kids go there." Yeah, they might learn that the authorities are war criminals!

Besides generic fascist fear-mongering to keep citizens willing to give up freedom for 'security', this is the reason for the whole 'Amber Alert' campaign, IMHO, to tie in parents fears for their children by keeping them home watching TV and taking their propaganda medicine to grow up as good soldiers and drones.

So the threat of other people and the chill of the police is blended to form a two-edged psychological attack on being online.

For a reason. The unregulated collective intelligence of the internet is a HUGE threat to the fascist propaganda matrix and the fascists have begun to attack it at every level.

Yes, there are violent nutjobs and prudence is in order as always.
Consider COINTELPRO augmented by the police-state un-Patriot Act.

I recently spoke out at activist events and some people asked me to write for some local publications. Some even asked for my business card. I gave out a few then stopped.

The same guy approached me twice at events separated by long distances! Hmmm...I don't know who he is and that's my mistake!

This set off my paranoia alarms and reminded me of Hoover's Counter Intelligence Program to mess with liberals in the 50s and 60s.

COINTELPRO (the FBI infiltration of citizen resistance to fascism) is now going full tilt with new surveillance technologies and there are 'trackers' coming to meetings to learn who is effective as the loudest, angriest, articulate, etc. to keep tabs on the movers and shakers in the grass-roots level resistance.

Don't give out your name and info to anyone you don't already know and trust whether online or in person. Ask for their info to get in touch with them instead.

13. So does Jersey have a Hate Crime law?
While I generally think hate crime laws arent needed I would find it extremely hypocritical if this wasnt considered a hate crime.

16. I had no idea this was related to an argument.
Often, when an entire family is killed, it has something to do with drug dealing and revenge.

Sad that this came out of an argument with strangers. I hope the murderer is caught.

17. If is was Islamic violence against Copts
... as the article hypothesizes, it was par for the course. In Istanbul's museum is a letter from Mohammed to the head of the Egyptian Copts presenting the choice of having his people converted or killed.

The good news is that they haven't managed to kill them all yet. The bad news is that Mohammed himself - unlike of course large numbers of his nominal followers today, and also unlike Jesus and Buddha - was a deeply wicked man. As we strive to free our own society from the influence of crooked, nasty, murderous leaders, we must not turn a blind eye on the problem of similar leaders - living and dead - in other societies.

18. This type of crime has nothing to do with the internet, how many times
have I been confronted to my face by a conservative who would have loved to kick my a**. Some people are just violent enough to act on their words though most do not. The key is to not try to push other people around especially when it comes to religion like so many Americans are doing with their own brand of christainity. The Right Wing has problably started a bigger War then they realize with their stupid remarks concerning a religious capture of American thru this past stolen election and the * lied war in Iraq which continues still today.
