Poll shows Roy Moore with lead for GOP gubernatorial nomination
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A new poll shows Roy Moore with a lead over Gov. Bob Riley in the race for the 2006 Republican gubernatorial nomination, a potential boost for the former chief justice should he decide to run for the office.

A Mobile Register-University of South Alabama poll of likely Republican primary voters shows Moore with a lead of 8 percentage points over Riley in a hypothetical primary matchup. Moore drew support from 43 percent of respondents, while the governor garnered 35 percent.

<snip>

Poll director Keith Nicholls, a political scientist at South Alabama, said the results indicate the 2006 nomination is "Moore's for the taking."

7. Lucy Baxley is the only hope IMO
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 11:35 AM by Dhalgren
Baxley looks better and better all the time. And she polls very well across the board. Alabama has already had a woman governor, so that is no obstacle and Lucy just may be the only candidate the Democrats have that could stand up against Roy Moore and the "Alabama Taliban".

edit: called her "Baxter"! LOL

3. welcome to jesusland
holy crap. Another self proclaimed mullah with messianic complex in power, just what we need.

Maybe he'll declare holy war on a blue state and we'll have the opportunity to turn him into the fertilizer he so richly resembles in real life.

8. It's going to be interesting

The incumbent, Riley, is wealthy, and a former Congressman, so he is not tied in to the conventional Republican power and money structure. He alienated many of them by aggressively backing a comprehensive (and too complex) tax reform and government accountability program in his first year in office. This gives Moore an opening.

The leading Democrat, Lucy Baxley, stayed out of the tax reform mess, which in hindsight, was probably a good decision. She will be runnning, but in Alabama there's always the possibility that people who don't like Moore will still vote for him because they believe women should not hold authority over men.

Stay tuned.

9. Of course Alabama has already had a woman governor,
so it shouldn't be as difficult as all that. Lucy is a very good candidate, but we'll have to see...

so I could vote for Riley in the primary and help keep that wacko Moore away from office (assuming they have open primaries).

12. Moore is a polarizing figure, even in Alabama.
Many people adore him, of course, and many others, including more than a few conservative Christians, think he's a demagogue.

He might win, of course, but he's by no means assured of it.

15. Does that really surprise you in Alabama?
I live right next door (in Georgia) and although I've met quite a few people from Ala. who were great neighbors, friendly people, and good citizens, when it comes to their politics, forget it. They will never get over desegregation, and will never vote for a Dem. in my lifetime.

19. Yes, and Florida & Georgia are paradises of brotherhood.
Sorry, but I think all three of those states have a long way to go politically, and I speak as an Alabama native who lives in Florida. For anyone from one of those places to disparage another of them for being politically reactionary is like Peggy Noonan calling somebody a fatuous drunk.

17. The man HATES human evolution and human FREE WILL to change.
Poor guy. He's hurting and feeling powerless and victimized in his very, small, self-created world. It's tough "being human",...it really is difficult.

18. I hope he does run
He'll alienate every last person in that state and the re-pugs will be forced to make changes.
