Springer's on air, first day's a breeze

No chairs were thrown, and nobody wrestled in the studio when Jerry Springer introduced his new radio talk show Monday on WCKY-AM (1530).

Nobody even called the station to scream about Springer - much to the surprise of the host and his staff.

"I can't believe that there were no bad calls," Springer, 60, said after completing his 9 a.m.-to-noon premiere at Clear Channel's studios in Kenwood.

Four to five callers at a time were on hold throughout the morning. None had anything bad to say about the former Cincinnati mayor and news anchor, who is also host of TV's raunchiest daytime talk show.

<snip>

On radio Monday, most of the callers praised Springer - and the station's new liberal talk lineup - for providing an alternative to the conservative talk shows on sister stations WLW-AM (700) and WKRC-AM (550).

Springer blasts war in his debut

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Rick Bird
Post staff writer

Alternating between silliness, wisecracks and deadly serious political discussions, Jerry Springer debuted his newest career Monday -- as talk show host.
"Jerry Springer on the Radio" premiered on WCKY-AM (1530) as the station, formerly known as "Real Oldies WSAI," launched a new liberal talk format billed as "The Revolution of Talk Radio."

"'Liberal.' Why do we shudder when we hear that term," Springer said early in his show, explaining his mission was to make it so liberals aren't "so apologetic."

He said America "is thankfully more inclusive and there are more opportunities because of liberals. This administration is trying to undo all the progress that has been made over the last 70 years."

Listen Live.

Nice lineup - damn I wish some Pittsburgh station would get a clue.

WCKY-AM LINEUP
5-6 a.m.: "Wall Street Journal Report".

6-9 a.m. Tuesday: "Morning Sedition" with Mark Riley and Marc Maron from New York on Air America.

9 a.m.-noon: "Springer on the Radio," with Jerry Springer, Jene Galvin and Megan Hils.

Noon-3 p.m.: "Al Franken Show," with the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian from Air America studios in New York.

3-6 p.m.: "Ed Schultz Show," with sportscaster-turned-talk host Schultz from KFGO-AM in Fargo, N.D., syndicated by Jones Radio.

6-10 p.m.: "Randi Rhodes Show," with a former West Palm Beach, Fla., talk host broadcasting on Air America from New York.

10 p.m.: Lionel, with the former host of Court TV's "Snap Judgment" from New York's WOR-AM.

That ought to be a clear hint that maybe nobody cares. I don't know what Springer's political affiliations are but I do believe he would auction his mother off on air if he thought people would listen.

2. Springer's one of us
Don't know if you are, but he is.

At this point, we'll take what we can get. Howard Stern, Kitty Kelley, Larry Flynt and now Jerry Springer, on the side of Democracy -- who'd a thunk it?

13. speak for yourself. Springer is dirt.
It matters how one makes a living, and this guy has made a fortune exploiting the poorest and least educated in our society. He is a pig, and if you didn't have such partisan blinders on, you'd say the same thing.

Don't believe me, tune into his show. As for his radio show, who cares. By him advocating our stances I guarantee you he is doing us more harm than good.

16. You know what - people are fools
Amazing that people will go on TV shows like Springers. But there were a whole lot of people besides Springer who exploited these fools.

It still amazes me when you stick a camera in their face that many seem to become even bigger idiots.

But it Jerry Springer can bring in listeners who will hear a different view from the koolaid offered every where else 24/7, I say more power to him.

Some of you here never forgive!

17. There was a guy named Richard--

that Jerry had known for 25 years or so, and he had a hellaciously negative influence on Jerry. Richard was the Sr. Producer on the show, and booked all the appearances. As far as "exploiting the poorest and least educated in our society", people came to the show through phonecalls to the Producer (Richard)and Jerry never saw or talked to anybody til he walked out onto the stage. Richard set the topics and a good-natured Jerry went along with it all because it fit the times and because it was just entertainment and one of many shows just like it. Jerry Springer hasn't got a mean bone in his body and if he finally deep-sixed Richard, he'll be who he was meant to be all along.

20. America IS exploitation.. We always HAVE been
The fact that so many people are so desperate, that they will go on national tv and humiliate themseles is the problem..

In the 50's, my grandmother would get her coffee and hankie and blubber like a baby every afternoon when "Queen for a Day" was on. These were mostly Appalachian-poor women who would grovel and "compete" for a "BRAND NEW MAYTAG WRINGER WASHING MACHINE"..or "A NEW AMANA REFRIGERATOR"...or any number of things that most of us took for granted....because WE had them already.

Now, we have people who :

grovel for make-overs
grovel for recording contracts
grovel for "faux-romance"
grovel for "THE job"
grovel for a car
grovel for home improvements..

These are all things that "real people" used to be able to do for themselves, but now-adays "real people" just do not have the money necessary to even do home improvements, and we have all been sold a bill of goods.. If we can ONLY get "our story" on TV, everything will be wonderful, and our lives will be good..

Springer's show was crap, but he never pretended that he was "curing cancer". He knew it was an exploitation show, but I doubt that he ever had a lack of "contestants". If people are willing to cheapen themselves, there will ALWAYS be someone on the corner handing out dollar bills..

19. Who is this us you are talking about?
If you want to talk about anyone taking whatever they can get, then speak for yourself. If you like Springer, then say so. But accepting Springer for a whole varied group of people you do not know or have even met is wrong.

You like Springer, fine. Like him. I will make up my own mind. Others will make up their own mind.

I don't care what his politics are, he's an exploiter. If he's one of "us," I'm not part of the "us" you are referring to.

Didn't hear the show. Don't know Springer's political affiliation (he's famously liberal and Democratic). But you do know he'd "auction off his mother."

Thanks.

18. Fine ... you say he's a liberal ...
If we're hitching our wagon to Jerry Springer as a medium for the message we're most certainly screwed.

If you did a wide search of US media personalities over the last 15 years you'd be hard pressed to find one more exploitative.

26. Who's hitching? Free country, free speech.
More exploitative: OxyMoran Rush, mAnn Coulter, Loofah Bill, The Falafel Who Stole Democracy, Hannity, come on, you can name more than one.

Personally, I am not into a means test to determine those worthy to be called Democrat.

I like what Maddox said. "I'm a gun-owning pickup-truck driver and I have a bulldog named Lockjaw. I am a Southern chairman of a Southern state, and I am perfectly comfortable with Howard Dean as D.N.C. chair."

Open the doors and windows.

30. I didn't say 'more' exploitative' than anyone.a
I don't care how "more" exploitative Rush, Coulter, etc, are. Springer is an embarassment: a multi-millionaire who made his money publicly exploiting other people's pain and embarassment.

Sorry, I don't wallow in the depths to which Limbaugh, Coulter and Springer sink.

34. Dean?
I thought this was about Springer. Howard Dean is a beacon on a hill as compared to Springer.

I'm comfortable with him as DNC chair as well but I suspect many who only know Howard Dean through the primary process are going to be disappointed if he gets the nod.

4. dr laura (conservative propogandist) would surely auction her mother off..
on the air if it meant more listenership. rush "oxycontin" limbaugh would auction his mother off for an oxy fix. armstrong williams would auction his mother off if the chimp administration would again illegally funnel taxpayers' dollars to him.

i doubt springer has to auction off any of his family members for listenership. he's popular. people will listen to him. and, he's on the right side of the political arguments.

9. I love Jerry Springer
I always have. I'm glad to hear anything Positive happening with Jerry. He is intelligent, articulate, accomplished, witty, charming and clever. If he hadn't chosen a form of Entertainment that denigrated his skills, he could have become anything he ever dreamed of being. But Entertainment the a venue in which Jerry found profound success and wealth and that was his choice. So the Radio Show is a new venture and I hope that both sides of Jerry will shine.
I hope he never forgets the fun we all had on the Forum with Ziggy and Chi-town, and me, Jessamyn.

Good Luck, Jerry. You da man!

15. springer will broadcast in detroit
on the new liberal channel.

i've been reading du for months. i haven't posted because i usually have little to add that hasn't been added. today something happened that i really wanted to post, but i've been unable. i keep getting an error message that says "you haven't posted enough, go back and reply to some messages." i've been replying to messages for the last half hour and i still can't post.

so for all those who see thie message buried in this thread, detroit 1310am is right now broadcasting a non-stop, commercial free stream of jingles, cartoon voices and jokes slamming the bush administration across the board. it's absolutely hysterical. every now and again another voice comes on and says "1310 is no more, tune in thursday to find out why." and it goes on and on...

a google search helped me find out that the station is going to mostly air america programming, with some other programs like springer.

1310 is clear channel (of course) and was mostly conservative talk radio, including nutcase michael savage. it's a true delight to listen to what's on right now. i wish i could share the news with other detroiters, but after half an hour of replying and stil not being able to post, i have to get back to my life now.

grrr...very frustrating...

23. I listened to some of it
He was very good but he seems to have bought into the theory that the country really has become more conservative - as opposed to politics having become more of a beauty pageant (image over substance) than a market of ideas.

It didn't frustrate me so much as make me wish I could talk with him. If I were a radio host, I'd count that as success.

25. You know the really ironic thing about this is
most of the people who watch the Jerry Springer show are rednecks that voted for Bush. I can just see their tiny little brain cells shorting out because they can't compute the Jerry Springer show and his radio show together. Now they probably think they shouldn't have voted for Chimpy. My whole point is too many stupid people voted in this last election. Jerry Springer is a very smart guy. He used these people to his advantage and made lots of money doing it.

I was listening to Savage the other night (sometimes I just like to hear him froth at the mouth about liberals, it makes me laugh) and he actually made a good point. There was a huge turnout of uneducated white women that voted for Chimpy, more than in 2000. I live in a red state and I can assure you that's what got his ass elected this time.

29. I think the voting machines got Bush elected.
It's good to keep that in mind. The majority of the people of American did not vote for war and poverty and Bush's environmental policies. These redneck folks are out there obviously but they are not in the majority and never have been. The evidence is overwhelming that the 04 election was fraudulent.

32. I think some of us should raise our standards.
The idea that Springer's ok because "we're (he's) not as bad as the Republicans" is a prescription for disaster for us.

We should aspire to a higher level than that. A lot higher.

Being in the Western part of Michigan we don't get much left talk. The only left talk we get is Thom Hartman and we only get him for two hours. Would love to have this lineup here in Western Michigan to offset Limbaugh pill popper, Hanity Insanity, and that DR Laura hypocrite.
