Strickland Won't Run For Ohio Governor In 2006
Blackwell, Petro In Running

POSTED: 11:32 am EST January 18, 2005

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland will not seek the Democratic nomination for Ohio governor next year, he said Tuesday.

Strickland, a six-term congressman from Lisbon whose district runs along the Ohio River for 259 miles from Youngstown to Portsmouth, said he decided not to run because there are too many national problems that need his attention in Washington.

"I've concluded that the issues that I feel most deeply about, especially at this particular time in our nation's history, are issues that are being engaged at the federal level," Strickland said, adding that he'll focus on health care, veterans needs, trade policies, Social Security and the Iraq war.

Strickland said he plans to run for re-election to his 6th District congressional seat in 2006, but he would not rule out a future run for U.S. Senate. Republican Sen. Mike DeWine's term is up in 2006, and DeWine has said he plans to seek re-election.

2. I kinda like Strickland.
I certainly hate Blackwell and DeWine.

Doesn't the Moth Man live somewhere down there on the Ohio River between Ohio and West Virginia?

Can he be approached to take out a few Republicans?

4. Silly to give up a House seat
I think Strickland is right. The House seat is far more important. Don't know who the Dems will run for Gov in 06, but I think Blackwell will have choked on his own vomit by then. Pugs will run someone else.

5. Screw Ken Blackwell. There WILL be a Democrat who will take him or Petro
A shame that Strickland has bowed out. But this one is far from over. Mayor Michael Coleman of Columbus and Mayor Don Plusquellic of Akron are determining now which one of them will run for Governor. I've also heard that Rep. Sherrod Brown is considering a run. Brown actually threatened to run against Gov. Bob Taft back in 2002, if the GOP-dominated Ohio legislature gerrymandered his district. They backed off, apparently in fear of the legitimate threat that Brown posed to Taft and Republican dominance of the state.

Any one of those three would be very viable candidates.
